Melody (Melodie) is the main theme from Gluck's opera Orfeo ed Euridice, which is based on the myth of Orpheus, and whose libretto was written by Italian poet and librettist Ranieri de' Calzabigi (1714 – 1795). The opera may be the most popular of Gluck's works, and one of the most influential on subsequent German opera. A popular transcription of Melody for solo piano was written by Italian composer Giovanni Sgambati (1841 – 1914).
Christoph Willibald Ritter von Gluck (1714 – 1787 ) was a German composer of the early classical period. His composed approximately thirty five complete operas, as well as numerous ballets and instrumental pieces. His work influenced compositions by subsequent composers, including Mozart's opera Idomeneo and Berlioz's opera Les Troyens.
