Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828) was a great Austrian composer. He wrote over six hundred lieder (songs), nine symphonies, liturgical music, operas, some incidental music, numerous pieces of chamber music, and a large body of solo piano music.
Among his most famous works are:
- symphonies number 2, 3, 4 (TheTragic), 5, 6, 8 (The Unfinished), and 9 (The Great)
- The Trout Quintet for piano and strings
- the two piano trios
- the octet
- string quartets number 13, 14 (Death and the Maiden), and 15
- the string quintet
- the lieder (songs), including the sets Die Schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, and Schwanengesang
- piano sonatas number 14 and 17 - 21
- Moments Musicaux for piano solo
- The Impromptus for piano solo
- The Wanderer Fantasy for piano solo
- Fantasie in F Minor for piano duet
Renowned for his magnificent melodies, Franz Schubert was perhaps even more proficient at creating music of extraordinary depth and emotional power. And despite his tragically short life, he is widely considered to be one of the greatest of all composers.
