Five Hundred Miles

Written by Hedy West, 500 Miles (also known as 500 Miles Away from Home or Railroaders' Lament) is a folk song popular in the United States and Europe during the 1960s. With simple repetitive lyrics the song is a lament by a traveler who is far from home, out of money, and too ashamed to return. 500 Miles has been covered by numerous artists, including Sonny & Cher, Elvis Presley, and Joan Baez. Bobby Bare's 1963 version with his own lyrics was popular in several countries. The song was recorded by Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan, and Stark Sands for the soundtrack of the 2013 movie Inside Llewyn Davis.

Hedy West (1938 - 2005) was an American folksinger and songwriter who played banjo and guitar. She was described by the English folk musician AL Lloyd as "far and away the best of American girl singers in the [folk] revival [of the 1960s]."
