Ernesto Nazareth: Works

Ernesto Nazareth (1863 - 1934) was a Brazilian composer and pianist, especially noted for his Maxixe (Brazilian tangos) and Choro (instrumental Brazilian popular-music) compositions. Clasically trained, he was influenced by African rhythms and musical styles such as the Lundu (a style of Afro-Brazilian music and dance). His piano repertoire is now part of the teaching programs for both classical and popular Brazilian music.

Nazareth became famous as a pianist in the waiting room of the so-called "Odeon" cinema, and one of his most famous pieces, the tango Odeon for piano, is named for that cinema. A transcription of Odeon for guitar became quite popular.
