Don't Cry for Me Argentina

Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Tim Rice, Don't Cry for Me Argentina is the best-known song from the Evita, a 1978 musical about Argentine political leader Eva Perón, the second wife of Argentinian president Juan Perón. Singer/actress Elaine Paige played the role of Eva in the London production, and singer/actress Patti LuPone played that role in the original Broadway production.

The musical Evita began as an album before being adapted for the stage, and Julie Covington sang Don’t Cry for Me Argentina for the original 1976 studio release. The single reached number one in the UK Singles Chart in 1977 and sold almost a million copies in the United Kingdom.

Madonna starred in the 1996 movie Evita, and recorded Don't Cry for Me Argentina for its soundtrack. She also released a dance-mix version in 1997, which was a worldwide hit. The song has been recorded by many other singers.
