Debussy Images

Claude Debussy’s Images is a composition consisting of six pieces for solo piano composed between 1901 and 1907:

  1. "Reflets dans l'eau" (Reflections in the water) creates an image of water being not quite still, then becoming rapid, then decreasing in motion again. This work is considered to be one of his greatest works.

  2. "Hommage à Rameau" (Tribute to Rameau) honors the memory of the great French composer Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683 - 1764).

  3. "Mouvement" (Movement) is the most abstract of the six pieces. It is built around a continuous stream of notes.

  4. "Cloches à travers les feuilles" (Bells through the leaves) was inspired by the bells in the church steeple at the village of Rahon in Jurassic, France.

  5. "Et la lune descend sur le temple qui fut" (And the moon descends on the temple that was) is evocative of Indonesian gamelan music.

  6. "Poissons d'or" (Golden fish) was probably inspired by an image of a golden fish in Chinese artwork or embroidery, or perhaps by a Japanese print.
