Alone (Heart Song)

Alone (Heart Song) is a song composed by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. It first appeared on Steinberg and Kelly's 1983 album i-Ten ‎– Taking A Cold Look. It was later recorded by Valerie Stevenson and John Stamos on the original soundtrack of the CBS sitcom Dreams in 1984. American rock band Heart made it a Number-1 US and Canadian hit in 1987. Twenty years later, Celine Dion recorded it on her album Taking Chances.

Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly began writing songs together in 1981. Steinberg was the lyricist and Kelly was the principal music writer. Among their Number-1 hits are Like a Virgin (recorded by Madonna in 1984), True Colors (Cyndi Lauper in 1986), Eternal Flame (the Bangles in 1989), and So Emotional (Whitney Houston 1987). They also wrote or co-wrote the hit songs I Drove All Night (various artists in 1987), I Touch Myself (Divinyls in 1990), I'll Stand By You (The Pretenders in 1994), and One & One (Edyta Górniak in 1997).

After Kelly retired from music in the 1990s, Steinberg collaborated with other songwriters, notably Rick Nowels and Josh Alexander. With Nowels he wrote the hit song Falling into You (recorded by Celine Dion in 1994), and with Alexander his hit songs include Too Little Too Late (JoJo in 2006) and Give Your Heart a Break (Demi Lovato in 2012).

Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly were inducted as a team into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011.
