Albinoni Adagio in G minor

Giazotto's Albinoni Adagio

Perhaps the piece called "Albinoni's Adagio" should be called "Giazotto's Albinoni Adagio", because musicologists now generally agree that the piece was composed by Remo Giazotto, not Tomaso Albinoni. Although the piece had at one time been attributed to Albinoni, the scholarly consensus now is that the Adagio was written by Giazotto, and may have been inspired by one of Albinoni's works. Now quite famous, this work is most commonly orchestrated for string ensemble and organ, or string ensemble alone, but it is commonly transcribed for other instruments.

Tomaso Albinoni (1671 – 1751) was an Italian Baroque composer. While famous in the eighteenth century as an opera composer, he is mainly remembered now for his instrumental music, such as the concertos, some of which are regularly recorded.

Remo Giazotto (1910 - 1998) was an Italian musicologist, music critic, and composer, mostly known through his catalogue of the works of Albinoni. He wrote biographies of Albinoni and other composers, including Antonio Vivaldi.
