Alberto Nepomuceno: Works

Alberto Nepomuceno (1864 - 1920) was a Brazilian composer, conductor, and teacher. As a young man, he participated in the overthrow of the Brazilian monarchy and the creation of the First Brazilian Republic in 1889.

He studied music in Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Berlin, and Paris. His strong foundation in late nineteenth-century music enabled him to intertwine Brazilian nationalism with western music. He was a teacher of Heitor Villa-Lobos, and a friend of Edvard Grieg, his wife's music teacher.

Among Nepomuceno's works is his third string quartet Brasileiro (1890), probably the first example of the integration of Brazilian folk melody with the Central European romantic idiom. His other works include the opera Abul (1905), Artemis (1898), Electra (1894), the Orchestral Pieces (1888), Sinfonia in G minor (1893), and Serenata (1902).

His piano composition 4 Peças lyricas, Opus 13, was written in Paris in 1894, and consists of four movements: Anhelo, Valsa, Dialogo, and Galhofeira.
