RESULT OF SPRING 2012 ELECTIONS

President: Ariana Munoz (Hummad Mallick) (not going to be around for Fall 2012)

Vice-President: Brian Coyle (not going to be around for Fall 2012)

Treasurer(s): Stephen Fiore

Secretary: Zach Sagginario (not going to be around for Fall 2012)

Advisor: Prof. G. Denicolo

During the spring/2012 semester, we've achieved a couple of great things: our first and successful bake sale for the club (we've raised about 50 dollars - which we have decided to donate back to the Club Board), and an excellent trip to BNL. The speakers/guides were better than ever, really, all students and I thought so - I guess we were lucky. According to Elaine Lowenstein from BNL, who organizes our tours, it is the luck of the pick, of whomever was available and willing to dedicate his time to guide us.

Not sure what's going to happen to the club this Fall 2012. Many of the officers above won't be around this Fall 2012 semester. Again, I shall wait and see if any student asks about the Physics Club during the first weeks of class. If students show interest, we can start planning events all over again...

The Physics Club was "hibernating", we guess, this past semester (Fall 2011).

Marie Smulczeski had volunteered to be our President so that the Club would remain "officially" open.

We are now in Spring 2012.

New elections must occur, but only if/when there is enough interest. I ask all interested students to send an e-mail to Prof. Denicolo (link to website, to avoid spam).

Plans for Spring 2011

Please come to our meetings and help us raise ideas, discuss the following topics and/or develop them!!

Ideas to raise money:

  • We are thinking about a bake sale in the cafeteria this Spring 2011. Maybe we could have a spinning wheel, or any other game show, where students have the opportunity to win a prize.

  • We are also thinking about creating physics tutoring sessions: like a big tutoring marathon, for a day, once a month. Something like that. Would you be interested? As a student, would you like that extra help? Let us know!! Send an e-mail to one of our officers to let us know whether you like the idea.

  • Jeopardy game with other departments (competing groups would be formed by officers of each club). We could collect donations.

Ideas about trips for Spring 2011:

  • another BNL trip is certainly on the agenda.

  • trip to the Museum of Science in Boston (http://www.mos.org/): what do you think? Give us your feedback please. Send an e-mail to one of the officers about it.

  • visit companies interested in interns, such as the Photonics Industries and others.

  • visit a water filtration center - learn about the science involved.

  • Six Flag (NJ) trip: preferably on an official physics day (Six Flags has a day only for physics students). This will require a BUS, and therefore a LOT of people need to come. It is a bit more complicated to organize right now, so we are thinking about leaving the Six Flags trip for Fall/2011.

Experimental projects and activities to entertain us and keep us talking and thinking together:

  • the windmill project: we would give us the whole semester to design and build a few windmill prototypes to collect electricity. In the future, we would like to display our best model somewhere very visible in the college.

  • we would like to cultivate the habit of having one student talk per meeting: this talk is VERY INFORMAL, where a student picks a subject he/she is interested or found curious in a magazine or journal, newspaper, etc.

External speakers:

not yet scheduled, but we believe we will have at least one speaker from Stony Brook University (something about experimental physics this time) this spring 2011.
