A practical, entry‑level introduction to metallurgy training course that explains the fundamentals of metal structure, processing and behaviour, delivered as flexible self‑study and on‑site training suitable for complete beginners through to technicians and engineers. No prior knowledge of Metallurgy is required.
The course is focussed on providing practical, work-place ready skills that employers and industry require, but that many academic programmes do not provide.
Atomic and crystal structure: how atomic bonding and crystal unit cells control ductility, strength and deformation mechanisms.
Phase diagrams and phase transformations: understanding phase stability, solidification and heat‑treatment responses that determine microstructure and properties.
Alloy systems and chemistry: roles of common alloying elements in steels, aluminium and other engineering metals and how composition controls performance.
Mechanical behaviour and failure: fundamentals of elastic/plastic deformation, hardness, toughness and common fracture modes.
Metallographic interpretation: reading and describing macro and microstructures from prepared samples and relating features to processing history.
Basic test data interpretation: extracting meaning from hardness, tensile and simple mechanical test results and using them to judge material fitness for purpose.
Sample preparation awareness: specimen preparation basics for reliable microstructure and mechanical testing outcomes.
Root‑cause thinking: linking observed defects and failures to processing, microstructure or service conditions to define corrective actions.
Familiarity with common techniques: practical exposure to metallography, hardness testing and the practical limits of production / quality tests used in industry.
Specification awareness: ability to read material certificates and basic inspection criteria and to contribute to quality control records and traceability.
Competence to explain how processing affects microstructure and properties, to perform basic metallurgical assessments and to contribute credible evidence to inspection and failure investigations.
Value to employers through improved first‑pass acceptance, reduced rework and clearer technical input to production, QA and maintenance decisions.
Technicians, junior engineers, quality and inspection staff, laboratory technicians and anyone who needs a solid, practical foundation in metallurgy to support production, testing or failure analysis.
