The class is a mere instrument to capture the abilities of the dancers. The dancers are not there to seek your teaching on how to dance. They have their own teachers.
NO CORRECTION
A. We do not waste time giving corrections that may be applicable to only some of the participants but not all of them. We should not waste the time of those who are doing it correctly or incapable of correcting themselves yet.
B. If more than 1/3 of the dancers have misunderstood or did not catch it, please go ahead and do a correction for all.
C. Please refrain from giving corrections to an individual participant; again, we don't want to waste the time of the others.
D. They should have been receiving corrections from their instructors. Also, to respect their instructors, we want to refrain from giving corrections to them.
Please COMPLETELY DEMONSTRATE the steps from front to back as well as from back to front, with the exact tempo you want from them. That way, all students can perceive your model movements with the exact beat. When it started with music, kindly demonstrate at least one round of movement from front to the back, if you will, from back to front. This is your most significant contribution to the audition. Students can catch what movements are required and to what tempo; and above all, be able to learn from your role model demonstration.
SIMPLER COMBINATION. Would you please refrain from making the steps too complicated, such as the back round has some steps different from the front round? We want students to grasp the steps mentally completely and be able to exhibit the steps with their joy and feeling. We don’t want their movements to be hampered by worrying about the order of any complicated steps. If it were your regular class, students know your movement patterns. But, at the audition, most of them may take your class for the first time. It is harder to grasp what you are asking them to do.
Assign the time: 30 minutes for the barre exercises; 35 minutes for combinations on the floor; 25 minutes for advanced techniques on the floor. Please tell the dancers, "If you do not feel comfortable attempting this, don't." We need this to give advanced ones a chance to show their ability. For higher-level technique, by just mentioning the vocabulary, the students would understand. So, the instructor doesn’t have to give a complete demonstration. We will give you a sign 3 minutes before the transition time.
FLOOR WORK:
If you want to divide them as a group, one group to be about 10 students.
If you want them do movements across the floor diagonally, please always allow each group of 3 - 4 to dance two sets of a given movement. After the last group finishes two sets, the next group will start. We, as the judges, need to be able to watch one group completely before we move our eyes to the next.
Thank you for your cooperation.
