Peter is excited to be taking on new students for piano of all ages. The focus includes piano proficiency, music theory, improvisation, and having a good time. He is a professional musician based out of Shelburne VT where he teaches and records from his beautiful barn-studio.
Piano proficiency is based on playing technique, posture, scale and chordal fingering, and how to read music and chord symbols.
Music theory explains why music sounds the way it does. I think of music theory as a guideline or a map showing how music has evolved. It explains and makes sense of how scales, harmony, and musical forms exist and why we use them.
Improvisation is a way of speaking a musical language. Through improvisation, there is a discovery of one's voice. I say "voice" because when improvising on any instrument, it is important to consider breath, phrasing, intonation, and vocabulary. In developing the voice, studying the concepts of harmony, scales, and rhythms are important tools for developing ideas and vocabulary; studying these concepts is a path to strengthen and allow the voice to be expressed.
