More interested in form than line, much of my work is based on reduction; chalking, inking or painting a surface only to remove that chalk or paint with an implement, a rag, an eraser, or often, just my fingers. I enjoy the tactile aspect of working with my materials. I like touching and moving paint with my fingertip or a tightly held rag. For me, the longer the brush, the less connection I have to the imagery.
Nature provides me with unending subject matter. As I walk down city streets or the beaches of Eastern Long Island, I am struck by shadows cast by a barely budded pear tree or the orange light at dusk, illuminating the windows of a turn of the century brownstone; of a flock of Piping Plovers skirting the surf, or the Reservoir just before dark. My Pandemic imposed solitude in the woods of my Hudson Valley retreat afforded me ever-changing views of the same stand of trees. Each season, each day, each moment brought with it remarkable changes. Even as I move toward abstraction, my work is tempered by my need to stay grounded in what I see. I tap into the quotidian to illuminate the human experience, to reveal the mystery in the obvious, to connect me to you and our shared experience on this earth.
