Film Screening of A Fierce Green Fire, August 8th

A FIERCE GREEN FIRE, The Battle for a Living Planet, has been described as “The most thorough, expansive, and inclusive documentary film on the rise of modern environmentalism.” Join Pacifica’s Environmental Family to enjoy a healthy dose of inspiration on Friday, August 8 at the Sharp Park Library for a screening of the film, which has variously been called “dynamic,” “ambitious,” “powerful,” and “uplifting.”

Covering fifty years of grassroots and global activism from conservation to climate change, the film explores the complex roles that science, religion, gender, race, economics, and politics play in environmental attitudes and reforms. From the Grand Canyon to Love Canal to the Amazon, the film tells the vivid stories of real people who understand that human welfare requires ecological welfare.

San Francisco filmmaker Mark Kitchell, director of the Academy Award-nominated “Berkeley in the Sixties,” began his career with an interest in social change through community and activism. He regards the environmental movement as “the biggest movement of our time and maybe the most important in terms of what’s at stake.”

In A FIERCE GREEN FIRE, he uses rare photos and video clips, and interviews of both the famous and the unknown to create a visually stunning survey of “the greatest hits” of the environmental movement. Narrators Robert Redford, Ashley Judd, Van Jones, Isabel Allende, and Meryl Streep contribute their views and help connect the origins of environmental history with the variety of issues challenging society today.
