THE JOURNEY BEGINS...
Arriving in Hong Kong, Arlene learned there was a place called Mong Kok where in the labyrinth of street markets, she may find small pearl vendors – unlike those selling to anyone passing by – who offered large, lustrous cultured pearls. Several days and many hours of looking at pearls, Arlene knew that there were no pearls worthy of becoming Pearls of Wisdom in Hong Kong’s markets.
But, as she met with these vendors in Hong Kong, she learned that there was place in Shanghai where she may find the elusive Pearls of Wisdom.
Here in the back streets and ancient hutongs of Shanghai’s pre-World War II garment center, she found a vendor offering pearls from cultivators in a remote province. Arlene and Ms. Wu became fast friends as they were together hours each day analyzing every pearl that was to be included in a necklace. The necklace was beautifully crafted and lustrous, but because the ancient cultivator did not offer the 10-10.5 millimeter pearls required, Arlene and her new friend recognized that – although spectacularly lustrous and of fine quality, these could not be Pearls of Wisdom.
Once again Arlene was on the trail of pearls worthy to be Pearls of Wisdom. And fortunately, Ms. Wu knew exactly where Arlene should go next – Beijing’s pearl market. Arlene’s quest continued in Beijing. In the meantime, Sahra, a dear friend in New York had asked Arlene to bring her a long strand of pearls. Now the quest became even more intense, as Arlene knew her friend’s taste level was stratospheric – so there could be no compromise in quality – the Pearls of Wisdom had to be of the highest level! What started as a simple search for Arlene to locate the very best, lustrous pearls in China – now became a mission. The pearl market proved a poor source to meet her mission.
Then one day, by chance Arlene was walking about Beijing’s back streets and fell upon Robert’s little factory. Robert as it turns out was exactly the right person – not only did he have a boutique jewelry factory, but had immediate access to pearls from ancient cultivators with centuries of experience in cultured pearls. Pearls from beds that had adorned Emperors and their consorts from the Qing and Ming dynasties.
After miles of searching, a chance walk, advice from people she met in Hong Kong and Shanghai – finally Arlene felt she had found pearls worthy of being Pearls of Wisdom. But first she had to wait to see the first strands. When Robert first presented his pearls to Arlene, she knew they were exactly the nine to nine and half millimeter, extremely lustrous pearls she was searching for! But the journey was not over – because these were cultured natural pearls, Arlene knew she had to painstakingly select each pearl that went into the 106 inch necklace for her friend.
When the first necklace was done – it truly represented Arlene’s vision of Pearls of Wisdom – extreme luster, naturally cultured white pearls. Rich tones and with a subtle reflection of the wearer made these pearls very special.
Of course the test was when Arlene presented the first strand to her friend in New York. Not only was her friend astonished at the quality, she was equally amazed by the value, “this can’t be, I saw these on Madison Avenue in New York City at $20,000 and they weren’t as long as these!”
Arlene’s journey to find Pearls of Wisdom was an adventure in determination. Her mission was to locate the world’s very best cultured pearls at a price that would be affordable to any woman seeking the elegance and style that real pearls reflect. She has done the work, traveled to China’s great markets and found exactly the source that delivers consistent high quality Pearls of Wisdom for you. All Pearls come with a jewelers appraisal.
