2017 Scholarship for Collegiate Studies Information & Application

The Phi Delta Kappa, International Houston Area Chapter (#1025) will award a $750 scholarship to a student pursuing a degree in education. The award will be sent to the student’s college or university of choice to be applied toward the cost of tuition or as a book stipend.

Award Criteria:

1. Applicant must be a high school senior or a student currently enrolled in a college or university. Special consideration will be given to applicant if parent or family member is a PDK Houston Area Chapter #1025 member in good standing (up-to-date dues paid) and currently employed in a Houston area school or department.

2. Applicant must complete the attached 2017 scholarship application; include a current (official) transcript showing grade point average and class ranking.

3. Application should be typed or printed clearly using black ink.

4. A degree in the field of education is clearly being pursued or expected to be pursued.

5. The letters of recommendation from administrators or teachers are required and must be submitted with the application. Please attach to scholarship submission packet.

6. Personal statement of no more than 250 words answering the following question: Why is the scholarship desired?

7. Current issues essay of no more than 400 words in response to the following prompt: Identify a current issue in education and describe ways in which you could make a positive change in the field as an educator.

The winning applicant agrees to attend the PDK scholarship banquet on Saturday, June 10, 2017, at the Junior League of Houston to officially accept the award. The scholarship winner will be recognized at this event.

Selection Process:

The Scholarship Selection Committee will review the applications; the decision of the committee will be final.

The scholarship winner will be announced at the Phi Delta Kappa Houston Area Chapter luncheon to be held on June 10, 2017, at the Junior League of Houston. The winning applicant’s participation is required for scholarship award consideration

The scholarship award must be used between July 1, 2017 and May 31, 2018.
