EUPHORIA

To launch the holiday season and simultaneously project a collective sense of Hope, The Loft at Liz’s invites you to delve into the realm of euphoria.

Through act or influence, natural or chemical, people are capable of achieving states of heightened emotion and profound elation. We all long to feel it, but what causes it? What stimulates the senses, spiking adrenaline and releases endorphins into the nervous system, ultimately catapulting the psyche into euphoria?

The Loft at Liz’s presents Euphoria, a group show consisting of 7 artists who share their personal expressions of euphoria.

Digital photographer, Bob Francis, creates floral digital images reminiscent of Robert Mapplethorpe. The dancing satyrs of traditional oil painter Patrick Hiatt brings to mind the world of fairytales that elated us as children. The abstract explosions of light and color painted by Robert Horvath, while Wendell Wiggins captures the exuberance of dance in his paintings. Painter Jason R. Hampton describes his impetus “when a desire captures you for even a split second, and is embedded in your thoughts for what feels like eternity, that’s euphoria.” Looking through a lens in the womb of Buddha, Luigia Martelloni finds euphoria in daily life activities and Ely Tahan juxtaposes language and industrial images to remind us that euphoria is within our grasp.

ARTIST PUBLISHES RETROSPECTIVE

Frederick Maryland artist Patrick Hiatt has published a collection of works created over the last 40 years.

Patrick Hiatt was born in 1942 and showed exceptional artistic skills at a very early age; however, being raised in the Midwestern United States in a pragmatic Pentecostal family who viewed painting and drawing as creating graven images, his interest in art was strongly discouraged. Still he persisted and at the age of 14 attended classes at The Joslyn Art Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Later he attended The University of Wisconsin at Madison majoring in Art Education. There he was fortunate to study life drawing under John Schrup. He also briefly studied drawing and figure painting in oil at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Illinois.

His work is strongly oriented toward drawing the human figure and incorporates broad interest in history and mythology.

THE CHAMPIONS GOES TO SHOW

Patrick Hiatt’s oil painting “The Champions” has been selected by the jury to be exhibited in the VMRC sponsored 5th Annual 2008 Juried Multimedia Art Exhibition to be hosted at the Park Gables Gallery, in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The exhibit opens June 1st and runs through June 29th. A Reception will be held from 2 to 4 pm on June 8th.

The Champions, a 16 X 20 inch oil painting on hardboard panel, is Hiatt’s nostalgic look at four boys engaged in the serious business of childhood. For thousands of years the game of marbles has been a major preoccupation of nine and ten-year-olds and the game has remained unchanged. At that age every boy is a champion, all you have to do is ask who the champion is. The reply is universal; I am!

A panel of 3 professional jurors selected 100 works of art from 610 entries submitted by 217 artist representing 27 states.

The exhibition jurors were; William Bennett, MFA, Associate Professor of Art, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, sculptor, Jerry Coulter, MFA, Professor Emeritus of Art, James Madison Univiversity, Harrisonburg, VA, painting and drawing specialist, and James Crable, HDA, MFA, Professor Emeritus of Art, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA, photography specialist.

The VMRC has quickly gained the reputation for presenting a critically acclaimed first class exhibition.

Oil Painting "John Lincoln Clem" Was Selected Be Hung In The Maryland Statehouse

This 4 x 5 foot oil painting of John Lincoln Clem was recently selected be hung in the Maryland Statehouse in Annapolis on Feb. 2.

"It's a pretty neat deal, it's the second year we're doing it and the show has grown from last year," said Shuan Butcher, director of the Frederick Arts Council. "The show's called the Frederick in Annapolis Art Show and it'll remain up until mid-April." (1)

Clem, a 9-year old, ran away from home to join the Union Army in the spring of 1861 and became the mascot and drummer boy with the 22nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry. At the age of 12, He was given the rank of Sergeant for his actions at Battles of Shiloh and Chickamauga, becoming not only the youngest soldier in the Union Army but the youngest Sergeant ever in the U.S. Army. After failing to pass the entrance exam for West Point President Grant made him a 2nd lieutenant, and Johnny began a second army term that did not end until he retired in 1915 with the rank of brigadier general.

John Lincoln Clem was the last Civil War veteran on the army rolls at the time of his retirement. He died at the age of 85 in San Antonio, Tex., and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. The epitaph on his tombstone reads: "JOHN LINCOLN CLEM - THE DRUMMER BOY OF CHICKAMAUGA - MAJOR GENERAL U.S. ARMY/1851-1937."
