plot_F1_F2 (praat script)
plot_F1_F2 is a Praat script that creates a quick vowel plot from a wav + textgrid with segmental annotations. It can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.
What you need
In order to run plot_F1_F2, you need to download Praat and the plot_F1_F2.praat script. Additionally, you will need 2 files:
a recording in .wav format with one or more sentences (any language);
a textgrid with a tier containing segmental annotations of phonemes, or at least vowels (you can use any set of symbols of your choice).
For ease of use, I suggest you save plot_F1_F2.praat, your .wav file and .textgrid files in the same folder.
How to run
Open Praat, then click the menu 'Praat', 'Open Praat script...' and select plot_F1_F2.praat. Click 'Run', then 'Run' again, and you will see this window:
Just enter the following infomation in the fields:
(Relative or absolute) path to the .wav file.
(Relative or absolute) path to .TextGrid file.
Index of the tier containing segmental annotations
List of labels that correspond to vowels (default: SAMPA vowels of British English). Each item in the list must be separated by a whitespace.
NB: if your annotation includes stresses or diacritics, you will have to include symbols with stresses and diacritics too; otherwise, they will not be taken in consideration.
Hertz or Barks as a unit of measure for formants.
The maximum frequency for formant extraction. Default is 5500 Hz (suitable for adult female speakers); change to 5000 for adult male speakers.
