Our camp theme, we believe, IS a community service: self-serve fix-it-tools, and classes on how to fix a variety of playa items. We have fixed bikes, costumes, shoes, RC planes, fire performance gear, camp structures, gnomes, and even the occasional vehicle. Fixing these things means less waste, and continued use of playa-fied items for years to come. Our classes help people learn how they can keep their items in good repair, passing along info that keeps stuff out of the landfill.
To some degree, this is true of the majority of our campmates when they’re at home in St. Louis. A run-down formerly industrial area in St. Louis has served for years as a camp hang-out spot and found-and-recycled art “gallery”. Many campmates do their part to clean up this area. Due in part to their work over the years, it is now a desirable enough spot that it has been bought by an investor to create matched studio and living space for artists in the St. Louis area.
Sumo, like many of our camp members, helped get camp ice on playa, but is also involved in community burner events off-playa.
