Today we're going to be talking a little bit about border.

Installing border is a little different than installing your paper. With our paper before we went all the way to the ceiling. We don't want to go to the ceiling this time, we only want to go as one in 1/8 of an inch shorter than the border. In other words the border will go to your ceiling, and every 8 to 10 inches I want you to make a mark because that's where your paper is going to go. We're going to be putting our paper up to that point and cutting it. We've made our marks, I'm going to draw a line to where our paper needs to go. This is the area the border will cover Plus about an eighth of an inch, that's all we need to install.

We will put our first sheet of paper up just like we did before, the preparation is all the same. We hang it up to our vertical line and we'll cut it right there after, I get two sheets up we'll come back and show you how to install the border.

Now we have our sheets up and revealing a little what we did was use the width of the border as a guide because all we want the border to do is overlap our paper by an eighth of an inch. The reason we don't go to the top before we install our border is because our border will dry out first and pull our paper down. So what we do is we go up to an area 1/8 short of where borders supposed to be and cut it, and after you've done the room you install the border the same way you've installed your paper but only we would be going horizontally instead of vertically. Wwe'll be going along the top of the ceiling, nice and easy smoothing it out using a sweep and or our smoother to continue.

Before it's all set as you can see it's overlapped just about an eighth of an inch maybe a little more, but we know that paper doesn't stick to paper so what we use is the same thing we use on the inside corner which is the vinyl to vinyl paste. We'll put a bead of it right along the top and then lay our paper down. Now again this is laid down gently just applying a small amount of pressure. We don't have to have it looking perfect today it should look perfect tomorrow but keep in mind after you smooth it down wash it often take a look from the side. Look from the bottom to see if you've got all the paste off to make sure that there's no shadows showing where the paper should be laying against the other paper. If you've done it right the only amount of border that will touch your existing paper is about one in one-eighth of an inch to one quarter of an inch and there you have your border.

How To Hang Up Wallpaper Without Glue

I decided to share today's DIY video after hours and days of searching for an alternative to painting and the place that we're currently renting for this project we wanted to go with a certain feel and theme for this room that the existing yellow paint could not give us.

We tried to make it work with no avail so I came up with two ways to put up wallpaper without using glue and without damaging your walls because we all want our security deposit back, I hope this helps anyone out there who experience the same dilemma.

As we did the following are two put up wallpaper without using glue on your walls and without damaging your walls. For supplies you will need wallpaper, wall Tech's hammer pencil, a wedge scissors a blade is optional and a staple gun. I also have this utility apron for convenience.

Option 1 is also my preferred method. After trying both of these I decided to do the entire room using option number 1, and you'll see why. I've also included a stepladder in order to reach the top of the wall, you could use a chair if that's all you have. We're going to take our wallpaper and we're just going to take it up to the top of the wall and add three tacs.

After that we're going to put an indentation where the wall in we're going to reinforce that with our straight edge or wedge, now we're going to take our pencil and mark in a straight line and then we're going to cut along that line where the wall ends, I'm going to stop about midway to show you guys the purpose of the sharp blade.

Those of you who are confident in your abilities can use a blade to gently cut along this line and again add a few tacs, adding tacs ahead of time helps you to ensure that you have enough wallpaper to cover your entire area. I'm not too concerned about the uneven pieces at the bottom in the top because a large piece of furniture is going to go against this wall and cover that up. Next we're going to go in with our staple gun and we are going to add three staples along the top and bottom of each strip of wallpaper.

How To Hang Wallpaper Horizontally

Wallpaper can really transform the look and feel of a room. You can paper the whole room or paper one wall as a feature, whatever your plans you're going to need to do some basic preparation. Today we're going to show you what's needed and how it's done. This process is going to be a bit messy so move furniture out of the room or into the center of the room and cover the area with sheets.

Prepare your walls, they need to be free from old wallpaper, all cracks need to be filled and they need to be clean. If there has been a damp or a mold problem make sure that this has been rectified by seeking expert advice. You should then treat the walls with a fungicide or wash, always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Once the wall surfaces are sound and clean you may need to seal them with a sealer called size, this only applies if you have new plaster or any other particularly absorbent surface, the size prevents the water from soaking up too much of the wallpaper paste. If you need to do this you simply mix the size with water and apply it with a brush or roller, see the specific instructions on the packet because walls often have imperfections. It's always best to hang a lining paper before you hang the wallpaper, it provides a smooth surface for the wallpaper to hang on. Wallpaper is usually hung vertically so it's best to hang the lining paper horizontally, this prevents the joins in both from coinciding. Measure the wall length and add an hundred millimetres to allow for the lining paper to go around the corners on to the next wall. Prior to final trimming making a crease in the lining paper, each length will make it easier to cut cut enough lengths to line one wall.

Now you're ready to apply the adhesive. We're using a ready-mixed wall paste to do this but you can also use a DC that you mix yourself. Always read the manufacturer's instructions and be careful not to overdo it. I loop the solution before you start pasting, remember to put on some overalls. Now apply the adhesive to the first cut length and fold the paper into a concertina, fold as you go for each links to one side to allow three to four minutes for their DISA to soak into the lining paper, don't forget to wipe the table down between paste in each cut length so you don't get adhesive on the facing side. Hang the lining paper and working horizontally from the ceiling down if you can't reach the top of your wall where it meets your ceiling you will need to use a platform that you can work along as you'll need to move safely quickly and continuously open up the folds and smooth down the paper with a wallpaper smoother to remove any bubbles or creases working from the center outwards to each edge. Use a seam roller to make sure that the edges are firmly stuck down, add more adhesive if necessary.

Next use the smoother to push the paper into the corner to create a crease then peel back the paper and cut along that crease with sharp wallhanger scissors. Don't overlap the paper at the corners as this will form a ridge that will show through when the wallpaper is hung, then paste and fold and hang the next length. Initially put the edge of the first and second links together and smooth as before, then slide the edges apart about one millimeter. This will prevent the lining paper joint from becoming visible as it expands.

When the wallpaper is hung on top repeat the process for the rest of the room when you reach obstacles like a window or a plug socket use your wall hanger scissors to simply cut around them. If you have an overlapping join you need to make it flush do this by using your snap off blade knife to cut down the middle of the overlap and then peel off the excess paper, this will ensure you don't have any ridges appearing under your wallpaper.

Allow 24 hours for the lining to be fully dry before hanging the wallpaper on top. The final part of the preparation is to work out exactly how many rolls of wallpaper you'll need. A standard roll of wallpaper is 10.05 meters long and 530 millimeters wide, you have to measure the height of the room and the distance around all the walls then you can use our wallpaper calculator to work out how many rolls you'll need. If your wallpaper has a large repeat pattern you may need to allow for even more wastage, check the packaging for guidance. Now you're ready to buy your paper, always check that the batch or shade numbers and product reference numbers match on every roll.

How To Hang Wallpaper Around Corners

At some point you will come across a corner that needs papering, and in many cases you'll need to deal with an obstacle like a window recess or an electrical fitting. In this article we're going to show you how it's done.

Corners of rooms are already perfectly vertical so it's not a good idea to attempt to paper around them if your room is rectangular. You'll only have internal corners to deal with but if you have an L-shaped room or your room has an alcove or chimney breast you'll have external corners too.

We're going to show you how to wallpaper an internal corner first. To cut the wallpaper to length making sure that you allow for any pattern alignment, a good way to do this is to hold the paper up against the sheet, you need to align it to and make a fold so you know where to measure from then measure between the last whole sheet of fixed wallpaper and the corner of the room. Take measurements at the top middle and bottom and note them down add 15 millimeters to the measurement at the widest point. Apply the adhesive and fold the paper, then partially unfold the paper and mark it up with your measurements, you can now cut it to size. Hang the paper like before aand this time fold the excess width around the corner and use a paper hanging brush to push the paper right into the corner, if the wallpaper creases just try to push it into the corner, make a small cut in the paper at the crease and then continue.

When we put up the next length of paper we need it to overlap the first length where it has turned the corner by about 15 millimeters, use a plumb bob and a string line or a long spirit level to mark a vertical line on the adjacent wall. The distance that the vertical line needs to be from the corner will vary according to whether you're using a full width sheet of wallpaper or using the offcut from the sheet that you use to paper into the corner. Hang the offcut wallpaper the normal way and then gently peel back the wallpaper at the overlap and apply some border and overlap adhesive. Bbrush the wallpaper back in place, wipe off any surplus adhesive and go over the overlap with a seam roller and that's it a finished internal corner.

For external corners you would simply continue to paper around the corner, with the right technique and sequence it's not too difficult to wallpaper around a window recess. First hang the length of wallpaper that needs to go into the window recess, then cut the paper horizontally at the top and bottom of the recess and brush the paper into the recess. Trim the paper where it meets the window frame and window sill if required, for deep recesses you may need to stick in an additional piece. Fix the next piece of paper above the recess, turn it into the recess and again trim it where it meets the window frame if required, this will leave you with a small area of missing paper in the corner. To fix this taken off a cut piece of wallpaper that includes a 15 millimeter overlap to the front of the recess and the corner and that has already been applied with adhesive. Fit it into position making sure you match up any pattern where the overlap of wallpaper occurs, you will need to make this flush and smooth. To do this use a sharp blade knife to cut down the middle of the overlap and then peel off the excess paper, this will ensure you don't have any ridges appearing under your wallpaper. Then wipe off any excess and go over the overlap with a seam roller, if you need to neaten up any areas now's the time to do so.

You can now continue to paper around the recess and add in filled pieces where needed, you'll almost always come across a light switch or electric socket and it's worth spending a bit of time fitting the paper neatly around them so let's show you how it's done.

First turn off the electricity at the mains, double check the electricity is off by turning on the light or by pluging in an appliance into the socket. Hang your wallpaper as normal brushing it lightly over the fitting to make a slight impression in the wallpaper, be careful not to tear the wallpaper. As you do this holding the paper over the fitting draw lines from each corner of the fitting to the center, cut a small hole in the center then cut along the lines creating four triangular flaps. Then cut each triangular flap off but leave about six millimeters overlapped around the edge of the fitting, then loosen the screws holding the fitting in place so that the fitting can be eased off the wall by approximately 10 millimeters.

Use the paper hanging brush to push the wallpaper behind the fitting making sure that no adhesive or water enters the wall box or gets onto the back of the fitting. Reposition the fitting and tighten the screws, that's the job done and you can now turn back on the electricity. When it comes to an object like a radiator it's not always practical to drain it down and take it off the wall so simply place the section of pasted wall paper above the radiator and make cuts in the paper to fit down either side of the radiator brackets, press down the paper and to achieve a smooth effect press the wallpaper into place using a slim paint roller and that's how straightforward it is to deal with corners and obstacles.

How To Hang Wallpaper Around A Chimney Breast

Whether you have an internal or external corner you can tackle these in much the same way. You will need to create a join at the corner to avoid the paper distorting, once it has dried to create the perfect corner you need to slightly overlap your papers to disguise where the wall runs out.

You'll find that no walls are perfectly straight or square and overlapping the paper easily hides this by allowing you to start each wall perfectly straight. When going into the corner measure up to the corner at the top and bottom of the wall and add an extra eight to ten millimeters to the largest measurement.

To allow the paper to go round the corner mark your paper and cut to size before you paste it, then you can apply to the wall using a smoothing brush to push into the corner, once you have smoothed and trimmed the paper the rest of the drop can be hung so that it overlaps the previous piece. Once smoothed out your corner should look perfect an outside corner like that found on a chimney breast is done in exactly the same way overlapping ten millimeters on the corner, the overlap should always be hidden so that it's not obvious so when a chimney breasts hide the overlap on the side of the chimney.

How To Hang Wallpaper On A Feature Wall

First of all we've got the perfect wall, it's been sanded down and it's been painted white which is the base of the wallpaper. I've painted the side walls and taken the paint about a centimeter around the corner, that's very important because if you paint right to the corner and then in wallpaper into the corner that can cause a problem because you can get to paint creeping around the edge which always looks a bit untidy.

I now also measured the place in the middle and I've used the laser to find the plum of the wall to make sure the first piece is straight. The important thing to do is to mark up and down laser line with a pencil mark, one at the top and others down the lazer line.

First of all we have ready-mixed wallpaper paste, we have a roller for applying the glue to the wall because this is a paste wall product then we have a brush for getting into the corners and the top and the bottom. Now we have a knife and some blades, always start with a new blade then we have the straight edges and this is for cutting into the top and the bottom and the side. Occasionally you need of seam roller and very importantly a bucket of water and a sponge.

First of all I'm going to start by pasting the wall, I like to start from the bottom because the ideal temperature for hanging wallpaper is about 15 degrees roughly and it's a little bit warmer than that today so we're going to do it quite quickly and it start from the bottom because it's warmer at the top of the room, so therefore it will take less time to dry at the bottom so it's a good idea just to start from there.

Make your way up when you apply the paste, take it a little bit over the edge. We make sure to cover it all otherwise you might get a bubble and use a brush to apply the bottom. Be quite liberal with the glue, you don't have to overdo it but it's a good idea to put quite a lot on. I can just reach the top without using my ladder and then apply the first roll of wallpaper, roll the wallpaper up with the pattern on the inside and you can drop it right down the wall without getting any glue on the front.

Slide the wallpaper along until you find your markers and then use your hands to smooth it out such a bold pattern like this it's nice to try to centralize the pattern a little bit and you cut off less of it and use the spatula to smooth out any bubbles push up into the corners and then trim it from top to bottom as quickly as you can. This knife has a little tail on the end of it which is very good for pushing down the corner so you get it in as tight into the skirting as possible and then just trim this carefully but swiftly as you can dispose of the paper.

Apply the glue to the second piece so very fast, if you use a paste the paper product you have to wait a few minutes for the wallpaper to soak in the paste but this you just just applying straightaway, role is slightly you can just wipe that off afterwards with the sponge.

Check the pattern number before you hang and slide into position easy as that then you can let it drop down, sometimes you'll find there's a slight difference of the pattern for each sheet, it might be a millimeter difference so centralize it. What I mean by that is make sure that pattern is flush in the center of the picture and exactly the same as before make sure you've got rid of all the paste, check the joints all the way down smooth out the bubbles from the center and again through the top, remember to be quite firm.

Hold the straight edge firmly into the corner you don't have to hold the knife to firmly but make sure it's definitely off before you pull it down otherwise it could tear, once again push down here we have slightly uneven skirting so it's good to make the groove with the back of the knife. If you don't have a knife use something else, wipe the sponge just in case there's any excess glue in the front be careful to read the label because some wallpapers you can't wipe so with those ones you have to be extremely careful not to get any glue on the front.

It suggested you hang wallpaper for the first time only use a wipeable wallpaper otherwise you could have all sorts of problems, as you can see start from the middle and work your way to the corners that way you get the pattern nice and even. I'm just going to carry on doing the rest of the wallpaper like in black and white movie. Now we have a stress between the wallpaper and a corner it's roughly 13 and 3/4 inches or 35 centimeters so we have to cut the paper instead of putting the whole piece there. Measure it all the way down and put little dots all the way down, I'm just going to follow it with the scissors.

When you're cutting it doesn't matter if you cut too much or cut over the dots but don't cut too little otherwise that could be a big problem when you actually put the wallpaper up on the wall. Take it to this side as close as you can try not to overlap if you can although it doesn't matter if you do because we've got the sponge to wipe it away with and then after we finished take it as far down as we can nice and even and then use the brush. Tuck it into the corner, be nice and liberal with the glue because you put too little you get what they call dog ears where the corner of the wallpaper lifts up and we don't really want that. To apply the wallpaper make sure you have a pencil and a pair of scissors handy with you in this kitchen, here's what you do is you tuck the wallpaper into the corner slide it into position and then take it down low, you can let the last bit drop. It's the same principle as all the others except we have this corner to deal with, slide it down a little bit it's quite easy to do you can play around with the wallpaper as much as you like until you trim it and then use the spatula to push it firmly into the corners.

Make sure there aren't any bubbles, when you get to the top it's slightly different. You take a pair of scissors and a pencil and you make a mark which I can barely see because of the color of the wallpaper, I can see it clearly enough and you take the wallpaper down again and you just take the scissors and you snip into the corner so that there's no folding and then it's the same as cutting the top of the bottom. When you start on a corner make sure you have a fresh blade so that you don't have to change it in the middle of cutting.

Take the top first, remember to hold a straight edge firmly and then you can remove that and then use this sort of tail Don't push it not too hard because with some wallpapers it can tear, just be as careful as you can just make a little cut there because if the wall is slightly curving at the top and then just put the straight edges as firmly as you can. Remember I'm right-handed so having to cross my arms over but that's not difficult, I could do it on the other side like that but it's better to do it on the outside.

Move the leather out the way keep on going down it's the same principle at the bottom I've already made the pencil mark down here so I'm going to just cut into it and then we can take it right down you can take it from the bottom to the up to the top if you prefer it's quite difficult to get the bottom from there and then you just remove it good little problem at the bottom here just cut it very carefully to the knife push it in and remove it and then use a smaller straight edge for the bottom here because we've got this in the way right push you down as hard as you can without forcing it and then and there we have it I have gone to join and wipe down the edge as well with a clean sponge and then go over to that spatula going to make sure there are no air bubbles just push out preferably towards the corner finished now you have your lovely finished feature wall it's time to put the bed back now thank you very much for watching you.

How To Hang Wallpaper Around A Window

Papering around a window combines a couple of skills similar to papering an external corner and trimming an edge. As you approach a window hang the drop of paper normally going straight over the window recess then find the end of the window ledge and press a small mark into the paper with your finger.

Cut towards the mark carefully gently push the paper below over the ledge and trim the top of the window recess is now cut two to three millimeters above the horizontal corner and all of the paper can be folded into the window recess and trimmed top and bottom.

The underside of the window recess can now be added by cutting a piece of paper to match making sure that there is a little extra, say ten millimetres to overlap the cut paper on the wall above the recess once pasted slide the paper into position lift the paper on the wall and fold the excess underneath making sure you match any pattern once the paper has been smooth and trimmed at the top and skirting wipe any adhesive from the window.

About Brighouse

Brighouse is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale, in West Yorkshire, England. Historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is situated on the River Calder, 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Halifax. It is served by Junction 25 of the M62 motorway and Brighouse railway station on the Caldervale Line and Huddersfield Line. In the town centre is a mooring basin on the Calder and Hebble Navigation. The United Kingdom Census 2001 gave the Brighouse / Rastrick subdivision of the West Yorkshire Urban Area a population of 32,360. The Brighouse ward of Calderdale Council gave a population of 11,195 at the 2011 Census.

The name Brighouse (or "Bridge House") originates from a building on (or close to) the bridge over the River Calder. In its early history, it was a hamlet of the nearby village of Rastrick.

Brighouse is twinned with LĂĽdenscheid in Germany, the link beginning with an exchange by Brighouse Children's Theatre in 1950 followed by a civic twinning charter in 1960.

There was a river crossing called Snake Hill Ford across the Calder – believed to have formed part of the Roman route between Wakefield and Manchester. A wooden structure called Rastrick Bridge was recorded in 1275. The bridge was replaced by another built with timber donated by John Hanson in 1514. Hanson's son funded a stone replacement for this bridge in 1558. The river provided power for the flour milling industry and the textile mills. Brighouse's industry received a boost through the construction of the Calder and Hebble Navigation, started in 1757 by the engineer John Smeaton. The town was incorporated in 1893.

The Halifax and Huddersfield Turnpike Act of 1823 allowed for the building of Calder Bridge, or Brighouse Bridge, over the river on what was to become the A641 road; tolls were abolished on the bridge in 1875 and extensive widening work was undertaken in 1905 and 1999 (both of these latter dates being commemorated in dedication stones on the bridge).

Brighouse was historically part of the township of Hipperholme with Brighouse in the large ancient parish of Halifax. The township became a civil parish in 1866, but was abolished in 1894 and divided: Brighouse became a Municipal Borough (and civil parish), Hipperholme became an urban district and Norwood Green and Coley became a civil parish in Halifax Rural District. The borough was expanded in 1915 when Rastrick was absorbed, and in 1937 when Clifton CP, Hipperholme UD, Norwood Green and Coley CP and part of Southowram UD were added. Brighouse borough and civil parish was abolished in 1974 when it became part of Calderdale Metropolitan Borough. The mayor's mace was removed in 1974 to the Town Hall, Halifax, where it is displayed in the mayor's parlour to denote the authority of the Halifax mayor.
