Lab Director

Dr. Pablo Gomez

I'm an Associate Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Western Michigan University since 2015. I received the B.Sc. degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from Autonomous University of Coahuila, Mexico, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering (with major in Power Systems) from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (CINVESTAV), Guadalajara, Mexico. My research work during my graduate studies was focused on transmission line modeling for electromagnetic transient studies. From 2005 to 2014, I was a Full-Time professor with the Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), Mexico City, Mexico. From 2008 to 2010 I took a leave of absence from IPN to work as Postdoctoral Fellow at the Tandon School of Engineering of New York University (a.k.a. NYU-Poly), Brooklyn, NY, USA. This position was supported by IPN, a scholarship from CONACyT (Mexico) and a grant from the US Department of Energy. During this time I developed modeling tools for insulation design of transformers under the guidance of Prof. Francisco de León.

My current research interests include power system transients, high voltage engineering, electromagnetic design optimization of power components, and grid integration of renewable energy.

I teach undergraduate and graduate courses on the topics of Electromagnetics, Electrical and Computer Engineering Design, Electric Power Systems, and High Voltage Engineering.

I'm a Senior Member of the IEEE, Chair of the Task Force on Frequency Domain Methods for Electromagnetic Transient Studies of the Power and Energy Society, Secretary of the Working Group on Modeling and Analysis of System Transients Using Digital Programs, and Faculty Advisor of the IEEE-WMU Student Branch. I serve as Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, IEEE Power Engineering Letters and IEEE Latin America Transactions.

Outside of the lab and the classroom, I enjoy my family, running, traveling, nature, music, sci-fi, classic videogames, and authentic Mexican food. I live in Holland, MI, with my wife (also a professor), our two kids, and our beagle Joy.
