John's Garage Door Q&A

Genie Garage Door Opener Will Close But Not Open

Brand new Genie screw drive direct lift plus installed it, door closed fine but will not go up at all. When I push the button to raise the door the motor does not run, nothing happens. I checked the limit switches and the safety beams. I went through the trouble shooting list but every thing checks out. Their help line is closed till Monday. Totally frustrated ...any ideas?

When you release the door from the track (pull the rope) does the door lift easily? If not it could be a broken spring or the door needs adjustment. Have you adjusted the torque settings? Read all the way through the installation instructions again to make sure you did everything correctly. It is possible you have a bad unit.

I'm looking for a garge door opener that is compatible with a liftmaster garage door - Part#41A5021-D

When you say a opener are you saying the hand held remote?Liftmaster does not make garage doors. If you are wanting a opener (transmitter) you need to know if you have a "dip switch" or learn code receiver. You can look in the yellow pages or goggle for garage door,Find a dealer close by cal them ask if they have a transmitter for your opener. You will need to provide them with the system either "dip switch"green, yellow, red, purple learn code button. You can find the the button by following the wires coming out your ceiling going to the motor. If you have the manual it will tell you.If you recently bought the home I'd suggest you recode the transmitters just to be sure no one has a transmitter to enter as they like.

How Do You Make A Garage Door Very Secure?

So, we are growing indoor hydroponic fruits and vegetables in a commercial location with state of the art led lights. The lights are worth near 100k us dollars! There is only one entry door we need to secure, the garage. It is a big garage door. The bottom 3 or 4 feet is made of sturdy metal. The top however, is made of very thin fiberglass. We are trying to turn profit off of these fruits and veggies, and insurance really is too expensive. All of the stuff online is stupid and for homeowners. We need to make sure nobody can saw through the garage door. I think they could even easily saw through the metal part with an electric saw and I could punch through the fiberglass. We will install a security system, camera, and a lock such as the garage defender (probably more locks too). We are still looking for the cheapest option to reinforce the door. We thought about a metal cage with another door on the inside. It will be expensive though. We need the most cost effective option. We also thought about somehow securing steel bars to the back of the garage door. I need some better ideas and help though. It is much appreciated. Ps. Remember there might as well be a pile of 100k straight cash lying inside this garage! It needs to be unstoppable.

Holes in the ground, inside with pipes to reinforce the bottom is a start, someone can drive a car into the door to make it fall off completely.

A metal swing open gate on the outside of the door, a good one, not a home depot one will slow down someone, but to be honest, i would be more concerned with the roof.

A $200 chainsaw will cut a hole and rope will get someone in, then they just have to break out.

Phone line monitored alarm system with cellular backup is as good as it gets.

My Garage Door Won't Open All The Way

When you press the remote or inside button it opens about 3 feet then stops. Something in the motor clicks, clicks clicks while the light blinks. It's on tracks, no springs. It is a stanley model 3105 1/3 hp. It goes down ok and I can manually lift it up (boy is it heavy) but no auto opening. Thanks for your help.

I am sorry to tell you but it is a broken spring. The auto remote stops because it gets to heavy. The door will open with one hand if the spring is working. The spring is located on a pipe like thing at the top of the door. The spring can break and not show unless you look careful. It is not a diy repair, but there are many companies that will fix it.
