A P P E N D I X 'A'.
RELATIONS WITH ITALIANS AND GERMANS.
1. Almost with out exception farmers were very hospitable, and
willing to make sacrifices themselves, to provide my troop with food
and shelter.
2. The Marshall of the Carabinieri at Collecorvino became our ally.
Having shot a Fascist in the village cemetary, I sent Toni to get further
information from the Marshall. He returned to us 2 empty .45 cases and a
Tommy-gun magazine, one of my troop had dropped.
3. Germans are now not searching actively for prisoners, unless
informed by Fascists, with the hope of reward.
4. Fascist element small but powerful, and intensely feared. They
are dangerous.
5. There are several reliable reports of an ex-P.O.W. Bailey,
believed to be in a Lancashire Regiment; who travels round with a tall blond
German, and a small dog. Bailey fraternises with P.O.Ws. and then informs on
them.
6. There is a very dangerous Fascist in Collecorvino, known as
George or Giougio; 5ft 8', dark hair, wears glasses, about 35 yrs of age,
with sallow complexion. He owns a M/c and trailer, has a trade of black-
market cigarettes.
