OpenPMU uses a publish/subscribe method for wide area communication. By using the MQTT protocol, multicast like flexibility is achieved over wide area networks. Details can be found in the publications below.

OpenPMU support IEEE C37.118.2 and IEC 61850-90-5 messaging formats for interoperability with other systems. Additionally, a demonstrator of secure communication using IEC 61850-90-5 is available.

Internally, OpenPMU uses an extensible, human readable, communication methodology through exchange of XML datagrams. This allows for interoperability across various platforms and research/prototyping environments (Matlab/Labview/Python).
