Introduction to Nanotechnology and NanoScience

    • Powers of Ten (1977):

Powers of Ten takes us on an adventure in magnitudes. Starting at a picnic by the lakeside in Chicago, this famous film transports us to the outer edges of the universe. Every ten seconds we view the starting point from ten times farther out until our own galaxy is visible only a s a speck of light among many others. Returning to Earth with breathtaking speed, we move inward- into the hand of the sleeping picnicker- with ten times more magnification every ten seconds. Our journey ends inside a proton of a carbon atom within a DNA molecule in a white blood cell. Wade Adams from Rice University explains the importance of nanotechnology in the energy industry during this TED Talk. He addresses issues about high performance technology and the importance of the younger generation learning science and engineering. http://www.wimp.com/nanotechnologyworld/ (25:20)

    • NANOYOU: An introduction to the strange new world of Nanoscience, narrated by Stephen Fry. http://vimeo.com/9068558 (17:27)

    • Emerging Science: Nanotechnology (Vermont PBS)

Nanotechnology is our ability to engineer specific attributes of materials and machines by controlling their features at an amazingly small scale -- one billionth of a meter. At UVM, a scientist gives a glimpse of how nanotechnology may increase the efficacy of cancer drugs.

Nanotechnology Applications

    • Nanotechnology's Role in Fighting Cancer.

One of the predominant features of nano-materials is an extremely high surface area. Emerging Science joins Chris Landry, professor of chemistry at the University of Vermont, as he describes how nanotechnology applications are improving the efficacy of cancer drugs by delivering more medicine to patients. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVch-fDzet8 (2:28)
