How to use the database

Step 1

On the following page you will find the excel layout. Click on the gray box to the right of the Search field. Enter the name or topic you'd like to search. Press enter.

Step 2

The search field will find any occurrence of that word in the author, topics, category, or summary columns. Each row with an occurrence of the word will then be highlighted in green as shown here. Scroll down through the book list to view all the highlighted selections.

NOTE: For specifics eras of time, the topics have been broken down by decade, examples 1840, or 1920.

Available option

If you need assistance in choosing a topic, click on the Topics List tab at the bottom of the field. You can view an alphabetized list of 2200+ topics that are represented in this database. Next to each term is the number of times the specific term is assigned to various works.

Information that is available

By clicking on a field, it will expand so you can view all the text that it holds.

Examples are shown below.

Each entry also has a link that will help you locate holdings in libraries near you. Click the link provided in the Locate column. In a few cases, the narrative can only be located in a particular archives. This information will be noted.


If you would like to enlarge the field to better view the information, you may click the right most icon in the bottom of the excel field (circled in the image below). This will open the sheet in a new window allowing you to expand it as needed.
