Join and put OFPE on your farm

If you are interested in joining our project you will need some technology on your farm equipment.

  1. GPS guidance

  2. Yield monitor on your combine or on combines you contract with

  3. Variable rate application of fertilizer, crop seed or herbicide

  4. Rate controller for variable rate application that can respond to a GIS experiment map

  5. Not absolutely required, but highly recommended John Deere equipment and subscription to My John Deere software (web connection).

If you have these capabilities: We ask you to identify a field that you would like to commit to conducting experiments over the next 2-10 years. We are primarily interested in determining profit maximizing site-specific variable nitrogen rates in dryland winter wheat. You do not need to change your rotation to be in our project.

  1. Send us a GIS map (shapefile) of your field boundary or at least a GPS approximate center point of your field. We are happy to do more than 1 field.

  2. Send us a previous year yield data shapefile from your yield monitor for the same field. (not absolutely required)

  3. Send us the width of your application equipment and your combine header.

  4. We send you an experimental prescription data shapefile that if mapped looks like that on the left.

  5. You load the prescription for the experiment into your rate controller and it puts on the input.

  6. You capture the As Applied Map data shapefile and send to us.

  7. At harvest, you upload your yield monitor data shapefile via My John Deere or you send us a thumb drive with the data shapefile.

  8. If you have a protein monitor, you send us that data shapefile as well.

  9. We send you a report on your field’s performance and what we would recommend for a site-specific profit maximizing rate (optimum) prescription (shapefile) for the following time you plant the same crop. We also indicate what those rates would be if you expect it to be a dry year or a wet year, or something in between. We also can tell you the best uniform rate to apply over the entire field or what the best experiment prescription to place on top of the optimum.
