2009

For 2009 Bo. T came from West Blockton, AL to share his step experience. The workshop was originally scheduled for April however it had to be rescheduled due to a spring blizzard and a foot of snow. The theme of the workshop was "Stepping Stones to Recovery". Bo shared his many years of recovery experience, focusing on the 12 Steps. One of the main points he made was the similarity of those of us in Al-Anon with members of Alcoholics Anonymous. Al-Anons don't share the allergy of the body, but once we look beyond the compulsion to drink, we both share the obsession of the mind, and we can work the 12 Steps.

Bo offered his guidance for working each of the 12 Steps, support by stories from his own years of recovery. In particular, Bo stressed the importance of uncovering the exact nature of our wrongs in Steps 4 and 5. So that we can be ready to have them removed. He illustrated the importance of gaining this understanding by a story that happened when his daughter was facing surgery for a brain tumor. While this write-up can't do justice to his story-telling abilities, the key point was that Bo was praying to have his anger removed, and God wasn't taking it away. It wasn't until he realized that what he really needed to ask was to have the fear removed, that he got the relief he sought.

Participants were given bookmarks (and rocks if they wanted them) with a one word version/reminder for each step.
