Oakland County Science Olympiad(OCSO) is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, dedicated to expanding the science curriculum beyond the classroom, creating a technologically-literate workforce and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by students.
Science Olympiad is a team competition that requires knowledge of science topics and engineering skills. It captures the kind of interest, enthusiasm, and commitment for science that is typical of athletic programs. The program is designed to increase student interest and test scores in science, while strengthening problem solving and teamwork skills.
OCSO provides training and workshops for coaches and students—both directly and in partnership with other local organizations. Many parents and adult mentors are involved as event coaches; this provides a great opportunity for them to become directly involved in the child’s education. Students prepare and practice specific skills for months in advance to prepare for the annual tournament.
Approximately 1000 students, accompanied by family and school faculty, attend these tournaments; in total, nearly 3000 people. The students compete in 46 events at the middle and high school levels.
