25/06/24: Congratulations to Rachel on becoming the Welsh Open Wallball Champion at the weekend!

18/06/24: NOEFC  was well represented at the Centenary celebrations of the courts in Zuoz last weekend, with Matt Chinery, Gareth Hoskins, Tom Hoskins, Seb Cooley, Alex Abrahams and Seb Cooley all taking part as well as NOEFC occasionals Ralph Morgan, Lewis Drummond and Edwin Gosnell. Matt presented the school with a celebratory painting of the upper courts, painted by Rachel!

10/06/24: The NOEFC summer programme is now in place, with the unusual courts match with the Edwardians and Wulfrunians on Sunday 30th June at Wolverhampton and KES, the barbecue at Broughton Castle on Saturday 6th July and the Warminster/Prior Park double header on Saturday 20th July.

04/06/24: There was NOEFC success at the Ladies Winchester Fives tournament at Bradfield on Sunday. Rachel & Freya won the Plate Doubles, Rachel won the Plate singles and Freya the Challenger Singles.

20/05/24: There was plenty of North Oxford interest in the Welsh Invitational at Rydal Penrhos at the weekend, with Gareth Hoskins, Harry Asquith and Charlotta Cooley all taking part.

02/05/24: North Oxford players were out in force last night at the EFA Centenary Drinks Reception and Awards Presentation

22/04/24: North Oxford was well represented at the Aberconway Cup at Highgate yesterday: Noah Caplin made the semis with father James, Paul Holland (with son James), Henry & Lochie Turcan and Gareth & Tom Hoskins all reached the quarter-finals and Mandie Barnes & Abi Butcher were victorious in Plate D aka the Mothers & Daughters competition.

19/04/24: The Old Cholmeleians 1 have been unable to raise a side for our final Division 1 match of the season and have conceded all three pairs.

16/04/24: There were plenty of NOEFC players in action at the Mixed Tournament at Harrow on Sunday. Karen retained her title with Riki Houlden,  Alex Abrahams & Rachel Wood made the quarter-finals, while Mandie Barnes & Ian Mitchell reached the Plate semi-finals, a competition which was won by Will Thomas & Natalie Lilienthal.

12/03/24: There was success for NOEFC players at the Kinnaird Cup at Harrow at the weekend. Noah Caplin has made it through to the semi-finals, while Alex Abrahams reached his first ever quarter-final. Beau Swallow & Ben Hart made the Last 16. Karen & Charlotta made it to the final of the Pepperpot Trophy, losing to the pair who had also narrowly defeated 2022 Pepperpot champion Stephen Thatcher in the semis.

05/03/24: NOEFC was well represented at the Varsity Match at Harrow on Saturday, with Beau Swallow, Ben Hart, Nick Choustikov, Spencer Chapman, Cyril Schroeder, Freya Butler and Annie Calderbank all recording wins for Oxford. There was also NOEFC representation in the Cambridge ranks, with Freddie Kottler playing at first pair.

18/12/23: A hugely successful Three Codes VI took place on Sunday at Rugby, Eton and Winchester. Thirteen players  - plus our number one supporter and magnificent timekeeper Michele Leveque-Shaw - stayed the whole course from breakfast at Rugby at 9am through until curry in Winchester at 8pm. Gareth Hoskins, Spencer Chapman, Karen Hird and Mandie Barnes maintained their records of being at every Three Codes, there were full debuts from Callum Yates, Tom Hoskins, Zoe Nicholls and James Wheale, repeat appearances from Stephen Thatcher, Stefan Nowinski, Nick Shaw, Harry Asquith and Ian Mitchell and guest appearances during the course of the day from Ben Lane, Robert Thorogood, Sophie Clifford-King, Seb Cooley, Matt Chinery, Rachel Wood and Daniel Chinery. Not even the late withdrawal of Archie & Abigail (Archie being taken to hospital with appendicitis - an acceptable excuse) could derail things and we even got into Winchester without too much hassle for once. A mix and match format was used this time at each venue - excellent work from Harry there, who spent most of the day's car journeys working out the schedule for the next venue. Nick won at Winchester with Spencer picking up the wooden spoon; Callum - our bona fide Rugby Fives player - won at Eton with Zoe & James sharing last place and Stefan and Spencer shared the winning honours at Winchester with Tom bringing up the rear (technically it was Matt, but he wasn't in Gandhi's and Tom definitely had his eyes on taking home one of the Cartmel STP prizes). The overall honours and NOEFC champagne were taken by Harry, who just pipped Karen to top spot thanks to the bonus point rule, with Callum in third place, Stephen in fourth and only four points separating fourth from first. Spencer's performance at Rugby was so bad that despite winning at Winchester and remaining undefeated at Eton, he still came last and took home the Irn Bru. We go again in December 2025!

17/08/23: NOEFC players have been honing their handball skills in international competition over recent weeks, with Tom Hoskins & Matt Chinery finishing as runners-up in the doubles competition at the Welsh Wallball Championships in Nelson before both joining Gareth Hoskins, Karen Hird, Nick Shaw, Seb Cooley, Charlotta Cooley, Ian Mitchell and Mandie Barnes at the World Cup of Paume Artignoscaise in Provence. All acquitted themselves well, with Karen becoming World Champion. Again.

30/05/23: Sunday's Tour de Wiltshire was a resounding triumph, with the eight NOEFC representatives playing lots of Warminster Fives (including some further refining of the laws of the game in our capacity as the foremost practitioners of this particular code), followed by both Eton Fives and Rugby Fives at Marlborough. Refuelling points were plentiful during the course of the day and there was only one open head wound. A success all round!

26/05/23: North Oxford were well represented at the EFA Dinner last night. Steve Kaaber-Gore came second and Karen Hird third in the Coach of the Year category, Seb Cooley was runner-up as Player of the Year and Freya Butler third in the Young Player of the Year voting.

15/05/23: North Oxford players were out in force at the Welsh Invitational Tournament at Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay at the weekend, playing lots of Fives with the school pupils and staff, swimming in the sea (well some of them) and collectively consuming the entire pudding menu at Pen Y Bryn.

02/05/23: Several North Oxford pairs took part in the Veterans Tournament at Aldenham on Sunday. Chris & Sid came narrowly second (yet again!) in the Open category, Grandad won the Over 50s with Richard Tyler, beating Tim Gregory & Ian Mitchell in the final and Stefan & partner Matthew Beard followed up last year's Over 60s win with a third place finish this time.

24/04/23: Several North Oxford pairs took part in the Aberconway Cup at Highgate yesterday. Noah Caplin got to the final with his father James, Mandie Barnes & Abi Butcher won the first ever Mothers/Daughters final and Calin & Luca Saftoiu made their tournament debut, scored a first ever win and finished runners-up in Plate B.

Noah sadly injured his ankle practising so had to withdraw from his Kinnaird semi-final, but Seb & Tom made it through to the final to defend their title at Berkhamsted on Sunday afternoon.

19/12/22:  The 2022 NOEFC Christmas Dinner was celebrated at the Anchor in Oxford last night. No Elvis this year but a very successful evening nevertheless.

05/12/22:  North Oxford players were out in force in the Turnbull Trophy at Eton yesterday.  Seb Cooley lost in the final representing Shrewsbury, James Piggot reached the semis for Eton and Tom Hoskins made the quarters for KES Birmingham.  Plate C proved to be especially popular, with Matt Chinery's Repton 4 defeating Stefan Nowinski's Shrewsbury 7 in the final while the C2 plate saw a win for Karen Hird's Repton 2 over Steve Gore's Burford 1. There were further guest appearances in Plate D, with Harry Asquith representing Burford 2 and Rachel Wood Repton 9.

28/11/22: There was strong North Oxford representation at the London Tournament at Harrow over the weekend. Noah Caplin & Alex Abrahams made the quarter-finals of the main tournament, Beau Swallow won Plate A with Nick Choustikov and Matt Chinery & Rachel Wood narrowly missed out on the semi-finals of the Festival. Karen Hird, Steve & Mark Gore, Cyril Schroeder, Stefan Nowinski, Harriet Asquith and Andrew Rennie were also all present and correct.

22/08/22: NOEFC players Gareth Hoskins, Matt Chinery, Alex Abrahams and Chris & Ashley Lumbard got in some pre-season training in Sussex on Saturday, testing out the three-walled Fives court in East Preston in the morning and playing some Eton Fives at Lancing in the afternoon.

17/08/22: NOEFC were well represented at this year's World Cup of Paume Artignoscaise, which took place in Artignosc-sur-Verdon at the weekend. The team spent the week leading up to the event acclimatising and taking on some land-based (a 16km hike though the Gorges du Verdon) and water-based training (paddle board, pedalo and kayak) as well as preparing themselves nutritionally. The team performed well in the tournament, with Seb Cooley making the quarter-finals, Tom Hoskins/Nick Shaw and Karen Hird/Richard Tyler making the knockout play-offs and Harriet Asquith & Rachel Wood becoming women's world champions!

11/07/22: There was an excellent showing from NOEFC players in the Graves Cup in Ipswich at the weekend, with former Monday nighter Alex Yusaf making the semi-finals, and another former Monday nighter Simon Cass winning the trophy for the first time. Gareth Hoskins beat son Tom in the Plate final and there were appearances from Pete Scholey, Jana Scholey. Seb Cooley, Charlotta Cooley and Mandie Barnes, with Karen Hird on organisational duty.

10/06/22: There was a strong NOEFC contingent at the end of season dinner at the RAC club in London last night and considerable success: Robert Thorogood was a fantastic guest speaker, NOEFC were runners-up in the Team of the Year category and there was a Player/Young Player of the season double with wins for Karen Hird and Noah Caplin.

30/05/22: The 2022 "Tour de Wiltshire" was another huge success, with the gap between a Cornmarket Cafe fry-up in Warminster and a Zaika curry in Marlborough filled in by a mixture of Warminster Fives and then Eton & Rugby Fives with the Marlborough club. Ten NOEFC players took part, including NOEFC debutants Ed Evans & Katie Oswald.

Karen Hird & Seb Cooley (with assistance from others) did an outstanding job as emergency tournament organisers as well as playing on both days themselves.  Seb & Noah Caplin have both made it into the semi-finals, Tom McCahon made the Last Sixteen and Matt Chinery & Stephen Thatcher defied the odds to triumph in the Pepperpot Plate Trophy. Robert Thorogood made the final of the Festival, Karen & Issy Wong reached the semis and Matt, Rachel Wood and Gael Guetard also reached the knockout stages with their respective partners.

08/03/22: Congratulations to Spencer Chapman and Ed Aldous, who both represented Oxford in the Varsity Match on Saturday. Both won their matches, with Spencer becoming the oldest ever player to win an Eton Fives Half-Blue. 13/12/21: After a delay of twelve months, the North Oxford Three Code Challenge was back on Sunday for its fifth edition, bigger and better than ever. Despite minor key/door code issues at both Rugby and Winchester - both thankfully resolved without too much panic - and some slippery courts at Eton, the day went pretty much like clockwork, with the culinary bookends as tasty as always (even more so when heavily subsidised by Giles Coren), the guest appearance system working well alongside the 14 players who were in for the duration and the Fives as entertaining as ever, with all the usual opaque Three Code rules in operation. The Rugby leg was won by Three Code debutant Noah Caplin and club president Andy Bishop, the Eton tournament was won in a sudden death finish by Spencer Chapman and guest player Jake Turcan and Noah was back in the winners' enclosure at Winchester alongside overall champion Stefan Nowinski, who pipped Andy to the coveted trophy for highest points total in the day by a solitary point.

06/12/21: There was a strong NOEFC presence at the Turnbull Trophy at Eton yesterday.  Division 1 player James Cobb won the competition for Eton with his school partner, Tom Hoskins reached the quarter-finals (losing to the eventual winners) for KES Birmingham, Karen Hird guested for Aldenham and won Plate B, and there was a first pairs tournament appearance for Burford School, with Steve Gore and partner winning Plate D and Kirby Clayton and partner finishing runners-up in Plate E.

15/04/19: There was silverware galore at Eton yesterday for North Oxford's players as Seb Cooley & Karen Hird retained their national titles in straight games and Tom & Gareth Hoskins hit the heights of Plate A champions at the Aberconway Cup with a final win over George & Pete Scholey

08/04/19: There was a strong North Oxford contingent at the Mixed Tournament at Eton yesterday. Karen Hird made it to yet another final only to lose once again to Seb & Charlotta Cooley, this time with Tony Barker. Nathan & Francesca Turnbull put in a strong performance to make it to the quarter-finals where they came up against the same opposition, and Ian Mitchell/Mandie Barnes and Matt Chinery/Rachel Wood featured in the latter stages of the higher plate competitions. Faye Kerr & Joe da Costa excelled themselves, recording their first ever win in the competition in the morning and then doubling their tally in the afternoon. Well done all! The only downside was a third broken bone in the space of a couple of weeks, with the Mitchell metatarsal going the same way as the Shaw leg and the Chapman wrist. Who's next?

27/08/18: Several members of the North Oxford squad took the opportunity to try out the newly renovated court at Dover College at the weekend. In the process, Gareth & Karen regained their record of having played on every set of currently playable courts in the UK, with Dover making it number 40

14/08/18: North Oxford has some world champions! The heavily NOEFC influenced Team GB squad took part in the 2018 World Cup of Paume Artignoscaise in Provence at the weekend and produced some fine performances. In the Open competition, the pairings of Ian Mitchell & Ralph Morgan and Gareth & Tom Hoskins qualified from their groups to make it through to the knockout stages and Seb Cooley & Nick Shaw almost went all the way, making it to the World Cup final before succumbing to an inspired local pair 21-18. The women's competition saw the two NOEFC pairs make it all the way through to play against each other in the final, with Karen Hird & Charlotta Cooley narrowly defeating Harry Asquith & Mandie Barnes

15/07/18: A huge thank you to Martin Fiennes for once again hosting the NOEFC summer barbecue at Broughton Castle and this year supplying weather to match. In the past NOEFC members have tried their hands at other codes of Fives and handball as well as the occasional foray into real tennis; this list now includes moat-swimming, an essential element of any club's pre-season fitness regime

04/07/18: The 2018 NOEFC summer tour to Rossall, St.Bees and Sedbergh was a huge success at the weekend, with much Fives played, some serious walking done (in some cases), the sea swum in and much ice cream and STP consumed (by some more than others). Faye almost joined the St.Bees choir, but that's another story...

12/05/18: It was a successful day for NOEFC yesterday with the Summer Fields first pair winning the delayed U13 final at Eton to add to their Prep Schools' championships win before Karen Hird won the Player of the Year award at the EFA Dinner in London, with Chris Ballingall winning the Special Contribution to Fives award.

07/05/18: North Oxford players put in a good showing yesterday at the Winchester Fives Mixed Doubles competition at Bradfield and the cross code fixture against Marlborough. Chris Ballingall failed to make it to Marlborough after trying to prove that his harder was harder than a Winchester Fives court wall and coming second but otherwise some old school NOEFC traditions were observed with birthday cake for Matt and a curry, which Seb decided was worth detouring from Highgate to Shrewsbury for. Good commitment.

03/04/18: The Easter Sunday Ladder at Aldenham was a huge success with 22 players from the two clubs turning out to play a series of timed matches, with Chris Austin emerging victorious with four wins out of four. The number of people eating lunch in the Round Bush afterwards was even higher with diners crammed in round the tables at all angles. Some sticky toffee pudding was consumed.
