For nearly 30 years, the Northern Colorado New Horizons Band has given older people in the Loveland area a place to get together and play musical instruments they haven’t played since their school days.

New Horizons was founded by Roy Ernst from the Eastman School of Music, “with the whole philosophy of anybody can learn to play an instrument at any time. Music making can go forever,” member Kay Broughton of Loveland said.

“The whole idea is that music making is possible. There’s an awful lot going into playing a band instrument that sometimes just doesn’t work as well as we get older, but you can have a lot of fun with it. That’s the whole deal, enjoyment and making music and what it does in your brain, which is amazing,” she said.

The Northern Colorado band formed in 1997, and is one of more than 200 bands that are part of the New Horizons International Music Association.

To play in the local band, you have to be at least 50, but since practice happens on weekdays, most members are retirees.

The band is taking new members as it prepares for its 30th season. Rehearsals take place at First United Methodist Church, 533 N. Grant Ave. in Loveland, on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATRONAGE!

Thank you to everyone who attended the Northern Colorado New Horizons Band season finale last Saturday afternoon. We truly appreciate your support throughout the season.

We would also like to extend a special thank-you to Bob Latchaw for leading us in two of his original pieces. He is a pleasure to work with, and we are grateful for his talent and leadership.

Aside from our Ensemble performances, regular rehearsals will resume after Labor Day on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. We wish you all a wonderful summer and safe travels to those enjoying vacation time.

New Horizons International Music Association is an international nonprofit music organization providing seniors and anyone over age 50 an opportunity to play in a band. Our local Northern Colorado group welcomes beginners (qualified instructors are available), and experienced musicians, past and present. Many members played an instrument in school, but had set it aside for many years. Others use the opportunity to try a new instrument. Our musical groups include: Concert Band (Blue), Intermediate (Red) Band, Swing Band, Woodwind Ensemble, Flute Choir, Clarinet Choir, a Saxophone Quartet, and a Brass Ensemble.

We meet from September through late April with rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the First United Methodist Church, 533 N. Grant Avenue, Loveland, CO 80537. Email: NorthernColorado.NHB@gmail.com for details to join the band.

If you are a current/former musician, or have always wanted to be a musician in a concert band, email us at NorthernColorado.NHB@gmail.org for more details on how to join.
