Beginners FAQ
Do I need to have danced before?
No. Even complete beginners can learn Scottish country dancing. You may find it easier if you've had some experience of barn dancing or ceilidh dancing, but anyone can learn.
Do I need a partner?
Absolutely not! Even though Scottish Country dancing is danced with a partner, we encourage people to change partners regularly, and we'll try to partner you with one of our more experienced members to begin with. If you do have a spouse, partner or friend that you'd like to bring, that's fine too.
How strenuous is Scottish Country Dancing?
It depends on the dance. We dance three main types of dance - jigs and reels, which are fast and energetic, and strathspeys, which are slow and graceful. If you're not able to keep up with the dance step then it's fine to walk the dances, or sit out for a dance. Age is no limit - many Scottish dancers are in their 70s and beyond.
What kind of shoes do I need?
You'll need to wear soft shoes. Ballet or jazz dance shoes are ideal, and soft, flexible sports shoes are also good. If you enjoy the dance, you may later want to buy a pair of ghillies - the soft leather shoes worn by Scottish and Irish dancers.
What sort of clothing should I wear?
Loose, comfortable clothing that's easy to move in. Layers are a good idea, as you can get quite hot dancing. Kilts are not required, and gentlemen usually save them for special occasions.
Do I have to book in advance?
No - you can just show up on the night. If it's a holiday time (e.g. Christmas or July/August) it's a good idea to get in touch beforehand to make sure the class is happening that week. You can also check the Calendar.
How much does it cost?
£2.00 per class - which includes tea and biscuits!
