Norsaremah Salleh

About me:

I am an Associate Professor of Computer Science Department, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and the former Director of IT Division in IIUM. I have been an academic for about 20 years and prior to that I have worked in the manufacturing industry as an Analyst Programmer for nearly 5 years.

I hold the BSc (Hons) in Information Technology from Universiti Utara Malaysia, MSc in Computer Science (Real Time Software Engineering) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and PhD in Computer Science from the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Being an academic, I have been involved in various academic administrative duties at the University including:

    • Aug. 2019 -July 2021 : Director, IT Division, IIUM

    • Sept 2017 - Dec 2018: Deputy Director (Professional Development Unit), Centre for Teaching and Learning, IIUM

    • Feb. 2015 - Nov 2015: Deputy Director (E-Learning), Centre for Professional Development, IIUM.

    • July 2013 - 2014 :Head of Computer Science Department, Kulliyyah of Information & Communication Technology, IIUM.

    • 2012 - June 2013 : Deputy Director, Information Technology Division, IIUM

    • 2011 - June 2012 : Industrial Attachment Coordinator

    • 2005 & 2006 : Head of Computer Science Department, Kulliyyah of ICT

    • 2004 & 2005 : Academic Advisor for Computer Science Dept. and the Kulliyyah

I was on sabbatical leave as a Visiting Researcher at the University of Oulu, Finland (August 2016 - May 2017) collaborating with Professor Mendes and other researchers from the M3S Group (Empirical Software Engineering in Software, Systems, and Services). Our research on the VALUE project was funded by the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Evaluation (Tekes) under FiDiPro (Finnish Distinguish Professor) programme.

Research

My research has focused on software engineering, particularly empirical software engineering (SE), pair programming, agile software development, and SE experimentation. I have conducted studies that investigated the effects of personality on the effectiveness of pair programming as a pedagogical tool in CS/SE education using the Five-Factor theory. I have a major interest in research related to applying or improving the evidence-based software engineering, in particular systematic literature reviews, and systematic mapping studies.

Research activities and possible projects with me can be found here. Contact me if you are looking for applying to Masters or PhD program in software engineering or computer science.

Publication

A list of my publications can be found here. Some of of these studies can be found at Google scholar or DBLP or ACM Digital Library or IEEExplore.

Teaching

I have been involved in teaching various undergraduate Computer Science and Information Systems courses at the Kulliyyah of ICT, International Islamic University Malaysia. Courses include Object Oriented Programming, Software Metrics and Models, Empirical Methods in Software Engineering, Project Management in Software Engineering, Java Programming, Requirements Engineering, and Information Technology. I have also involved in supervising students' final year project (FYPs) for Computer Science students. My teaching activities can be found here.

Professional service/activities

I am Associate Editor of ACM Computing Surveys. I have also been a reviewer for the following peer-reviewed journals:

I have served on the program committee of international and local conferences and workshops as below:

  • APWC on CSE 2015 (2nd Asia-Pacific Congress on Computer Science and Engineering), Fiji, track chair for Software Engineering

  • MYSEC 2017 (10th Malaysian Software Engineering Conference) organized by UMT and MySEIG

I have also been a visiting researcher at the Faculty of Information and Communication Technologies, Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne (in May 2011 and May 2012). The visits were fully sponsored by SUCCESS Research Centre (Swinburne University Centre for Computing and Engineering Software Systems), Swinburne University of Technology, Australia.

Other than being a reviewer and program committee in the above conferences and venues, I have been actively involve in workshops and seminars on Systematic Literature Review (SLR) at several higher education institutions in Malaysia. To date, I have presented SLR talks at UNITEN, UUM, UiTM, UTM, UTeM, UPM and Politeknik Port Dickson.
