I teach Creative Writing and English classes at Red Mesa High School. Like Michael Thompson, I taught the way I was taught in my teacher education program. I assumed I was going to teach a certain way, even if I did come from a different background. I realized this disconnect as I taught and started to add my own understandings of teaching to what I know and what my students know. I found myself asking: Can I use my students’ background knowledge in their learning in school?
Disclaimer: Thank you for participating in our workshop. We would like to establish that the presenters are teachers who invite you to consider multiperspectival lenses in looking at our culture of school and the students we teach. We are not disrespecting any teacher or any school; nor are we critiquing or criticizing your expertise and work as amazing educators.
