CSE 655 Seminar in NLP;
Instructors: Niranjan Balasubramanian, H. Andrew Schwartz
Those receiving credit for the reading group will be expected to prepare and lead a discussion once as well as be regular and active participants.
Active participation entails reading of the papers and sharing one's own thoughts and understanding at the group meetings.
Discussion Leadership entails thoroughly reading a paper and preparing slides to guide discussion. See Discussion Leadership How To .
Covering every detail is not the goal and will not be possible, rather, the challenge is carefully selecting what take-aways and details to highlight. Do not simply cut-n-paste slides found online -- you may use content but you must organize it in an original fashion in your own slide. Additionally, at least half of the content in your slide should be your own original summary of the paper. If possible, leaders should attend in person during that seminar.
Grades (satisfactory / unsatisfactory) will be based on:
50% Participation
50% Preparation and discussion leadership
> 80% required for satisfactory
Students should miss no more than 2 meetings, without explicit permission.
Overall, the goal is to have open and mostly informal discussion of the latest and most interesting papers coming out of NLP.
