I’m a plant ecologists with a special interest in plant-insect interactions. In particular, I study things like floral herbivory, plant defense strategies, and how multiple species use flowers at the same time. Current research projects and planned projects address questions such as:
My post-doc work (with Dr. Julie Etterson) involved helping build Project Baseline, a long-term nation-wide seedbank for the study of plant evolution. I assisted with writing protocols, outreach and advertising, and field work, including collecting hundreds of thousands of seeds across the entire Midwest. I also did some research focused on seed size variation across latitude and plant defense strategies across latitude while working for Project Baseline. I am still involved with Project Baseline, and am currently working on proposing a related workshop.
My PhD research (with Dr. Lynn Adler) focused on flower-insect interactions in Impatiens capensis (jewelweed). I worked with pollinators, leaf herbivores, floral herbivores, nectar robbers, nectar thieves, galling insects, and crab spiders. I studied:
