About NHS

Northwestern High School was established for the 1950-1951 school year and served as a replacement for Hyattsville High School, which was converted into one of Northwestern's feeder middle schools: Hyattsville Middle School. Northwestern is located in the north-west part of Prince George’s County (hence the name) and is situated about eight miles north-east of our nation’s capital. Northwestern High School was renovated in the year 2000 after nearly fifty years of use.

 While Northwestern is a public comprehensive high school, it is also home to the Jim Henson Center for the Visual and Performing Arts Academy, a magnet program named for the late creator of The Muppets and Northwestern alumnus. In addition, Northwestern is located less than a mile from the University of Maryland, College Park. This close proximity makes Northwestern a home to many joint programs with the university and a training ground for many of the university students studying education there.

 Northwestern is also currently home to approximately 2200 students and 124 full-time teachers, though projections show that enrollment is set to increase in the coming years. In addition, the community that Northwestern serves is seeing a large influx of immigrants from Latin America, and as a result, the student population is trending toward more English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

La Escuela Secundaria Northwestern fue establecida para el año escolar 1950-1951 y sirvió como reemplazo de la Escuela Secundaria Hyattsville, la cual fue convertida en una de las escuelas intermedias alimentadoras de Northwestern: la Escuela Intermedia Hyattsville. Northwestern está ubicada en la parte noroeste del condado de Prince George (de ahí su nombre) y se encuentra a unas ocho millas al noreste de la capital de nuestra nación. La escuela fue renovada en el año 2000 después de casi cincuenta años de uso.

Aunque Northwestern es una escuela secundaria pública integral, también alberga el Centro Jim Henson para las Artes Visuales y Escénicas, un programa magnet nombrado en honor al fallecido creador de The Muppets y exalumno de Northwestern. Además, Northwestern está situada a menos de una milla de la Universidad de Maryland, en College Park. Esta cercanía ha permitido el desarrollo de numerosos programas conjuntos con la universidad y convierte a Northwestern en un espacio de formación para muchos estudiantes universitarios que se están preparando para ser maestros.

Actualmente, Northwestern cuenta con aproximadamente 2200 estudiantes y 124 maestros de tiempo completo, aunque las proyecciones indican que la matrícula aumentará en los próximos años. Además, la comunidad a la que sirve Northwestern está experimentando una gran afluencia de inmigrantes de América Latina, y como resultado, la población estudiantil está mostrando un aumento en el número de estudiantes que participan en el programa de Inglés para Hablantes de Otros Idiomas (ESOL).
