Teaching and Service

Statement of Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is centered around one key concept: that students learn best if they are self-directed in their pursuit of knowledge and take ownership over their learning process. For undergraduates especially, I think it is critical students graduate with an understanding of how the research processes that have led to our current knowledge in biology work (laboratory and field work, analysis and thinking, writing and scientific dialogue) and with a recognition of how much is still unknown. Thus, my primary goal is to ignite students’ interest and appreciation for basic biology research, orientations they will carry with them beyond the classroom.
