*This page is about the New Jersey Transit Rail. There are 2 major terminals in New Jersey. One is for electric power locomotives, New York Penn Station and the other terminal is for Diesel Locomotives, Hoboken Terminal.
First, the fleet:
EMD GP40PH-2 locomotives
The active units on NJT Transit are:

Now, the passenger cars in New Jersey Transit. In New Jersey Transit, we have 3 type of passenger cars:
A. The Comet series
Bombardier Comet IIM and Comet IV
The Bombardier Comet IIM units are from 5300-5460
The Comet IV units are from 5235–5264, 5535–5582
The Comet IV cab cars are from 5011-5018, 5020-5024, 5026-5031
*The Comet IV cab cars are no longer allowed to head a train. Instead, the cab cars are inserted in front of a locomotive in the train consist and act as regular trailer cars. It’s also for conductors use as well including the Comet V.
200 units In-Total
6000–6083: cab cars
6200–6213, 6500–6601 (inserted on Hoboken Trains)

Here are the routes in New Jersey Transit Rail:
Northeast Cooridor: Service on the Northeast Corridor Line is electric via overhead lines and uses either Budd/GE Arrow III multiple unit cars or push-pull locomotive trains hauled by ALP-46/A or ALP-45DP locomotives. These trains are made up of Comet series cars or Bombardier Transportation Multilevel. The Princeton (Dinky) consist of Arrow III cars.
Raritan Valley Line: Trains consist of a PL42AC or ALP-45DP and a six-car set of Multilevels. This line also uses Comet cars for passenger service.
Morris and Essex Portion:
Morristown Line: Weekday local service between Hoboken and Dover now is mainly diesel, but was formerly Arrow III electric MU cars.
All Midtown Direct service is push-pull, utilizing electric ALP-46 locomotives and Comet cars on most trains, and Multilevel vehicles on select trains. Through service west of Dover from Hoboken uses GP40PH-2, F40PH, PL42AC, or ALP-45DP diesels with Comet cars.
Gladstone Branch: Most service is provided by Arrow III electric cars built by General Electric and Avco in 1978. The two weekday round trips to New York use Bombardier Multi Level Coach or Comet coaches powered by ALP-46, ALP-45DP Electric Mode locomotives, since Arrows cannot make the voltage change at the Kearny Connection. Service to Hoboken also utilizes Comet cars powered by ALP-45DP locomotives.
Main Line and Bergen Line:
Bergen Line: All trains on the Main Line are push-pulled by diesel locomotives. Coaches used are from the Comet series, and often feature Metro-North owned Comet Vs as these are pooled with New Jersey Transit's coaches as part of the operating agreement. Trains running exclusively on NJT trackage may also utilize MLV cars hauled by a PL42AC. More recently ALP-45DP hauled trains have been used on this line as well.
As on the Main Line, trains are powered by diesel locomotives operated push-pull with Comet series passenger cars.
* Mountclair Boonton Line: (Both Eastern terminals can use Bombardier ALP-45DP)
* To New York: Bombardier ALP-46 or ALP-45 with Bombardier Multilevel II or Comet cars
* To Hoboken: Diesel Locomotive or ALP-45 with Alstom Comet V
Pascack Valley Line: All service on this line is diesel, using either GP40PH-2, PL42AC, or ALP-45DP locomotives. Comet V series passenger cars are used on this line; Bombardier MultiLevel Coaches are occasionally used on this line. Some train sets use equipment owned by Metro-North, which are so marked.
North Jersey Coast Line:
The Coast Line has among the most diverse selection of fleet in the NJT system.
Long Branch trains to and from New York or Hoboken use ALP-46 locomotives with Comet series or Multi-Level coaches.
Arrow III EMUs are occasionally seen on South Amboy and Aberdeen-Matawan locals. Arrow IIIs cannot be used for service south of Aberdeen-Matawan since they are unable to change operating voltages automatically; a manual transformer tap-changer must be adjusted from alongside the MU.
All service south of Long Branch is diesel, generally utilizing Alstom PL42AC, F40PH-2CAT, or GP40PH-2B locomotives with a 4- to 6-car set of Comet series or Multi-Level coaches. Usually, passengers are required to transfer at Long Branch for service to Bay Head. Five round trip weekday trains used to provide direct service between Hoboken and Bay Head using all diesel. After the May 18, 2015 service adjustment incorporating "One Seat Rides" between Bay Head and Penn Station in New York, only two weekday direct trains remain between Hoboken and Bay Head using ALP-45DP locomotives. Weekday service to Hoboken now terminates at Long Branch using ALP-46 electric locomotives with Comet series or Multi-Level coaches. Inbound trains 2302, 2304 and 2308 between Bay Head and Hoboken were replaced by trains 2602, 2606, and 2608 between Long Branch and Hoboken. Outbound trains 2305, 2307, and 2311 between Hoboken and Bay Head were replaced by trains 2605, 2607, and 2611 between Hoboken and Long Branch. "One Seat Ride" service utilizes ALP-45DP locomotives with an 8-car set of Comet series or Multi-Level coaches. Two "One Seat Ride" consists utilize an 8-car Multi-level set, while the third utilizes an 8-car Comet Series set. Inbound trains 3312, 3318, and 3326 provide service between Bay Head and New York Penn Station. Outbound trains 3363, 3371, and 3373 provide service between New York Penn Station and Bay Head.
Atlantic City Line: Regularly scheduled service on the Atlantic City Line consists mainly of ALP-45DP or PL42AC diesel locomotives bought from Alstom, pushing or pulling primarily a three to four-car Comet train. This is the only line in New Jersey Transit Rail that goes its own route and separate to others.
NOTE: This is the only line that separates from the Midtown Direct trains and Hoboken trains.
