My personal understanding of God’s Biblically recorded view of Israel’s militarism is summed up in a way by His saying to King David that he would not be allowed to build the Temple because he was a man of blood. I understand this to be a reference to the fact that David had to establish the kingdom through military wars. This would not be a perfect and complete testimony to the coming Son of David. When Israel came from Mt. Sinai to enter the Land, I believe that God did not intend for them to take possession of the Land through military means at all. I believe that this only happened when they approached and then crossed over the Jordan River, and was because they lacked perfect faith in the Way that God intended to bring them into the Land and provide for them to take possession of the Land. I believe that the reason that God led them around to the east side of the Jordan was to give them an opportunity to go back, so to speak, to the place where they crossed the Red Sea and this time be baptized unto Mashiach as well as unto Moshe. However, they were not yet, even then, perfect in this repentance. Therefore a military action was tolerated by God as a way to allow them to go ahead and prepare on the East Bank for crossing over the Jordan and then also a military action was tolerated by God as a means for them to take possession of the Land. It was an imperfect means, as a Way of Faith like unto that demonstrated when God took them up out of Egypt would have provided a much more effective testimony in establishing them in the Land. Yochanan the Immerser came to call them once more to the repentance that would enable them to live in the Land of Testimony through Faith in HaShem alone, without need for military action, but they did not repent through Yochanan’s testimony. In the end, Jerusalem and All Israel will repent through the immersion of the death and resurrection of Mashiach and will thereby possess the Land of Testimony to the Justice and Mercy of HaShem in His redemption of the world, without any possibility of exile ever again.
The LORD was very angry with your fathers.
Say to them further:
Thus said the LORD of Hosts: Turn back to me—says the LORD of Hosts—and I will turn back to you—said the LORD of Hosts.
Do not be like your fathers! For when the earlier prophets called to them, “Thus said the LORD of Hosts: Come, turn back from your evil ways and your evil deeds, they did not obey or give heed to Me—declares the LORD.
Where are your fathers now? And did the prophets live forever?
But the warnings and the decrees with which I charged My servants the prophets overtook your fathers—did they not?—and in the end they had to admit, ‘The LORD has dealt with us according to our ways and our deeds, just as He purposed.’”
§ With regard to the verse: “Why is this people of Jerusalem slid back in perpetual backsliding?” (Jeremiah 8:5), Rav says: The congregation of Israel answered with a convincing response to the prophet. The prophet said to the Jewish people: Repent, as your ancestors sinned, and where are they? They said to the prophets: And your prophets who did not sin, where are they? They too died, as it is stated: “Your fathers, where are they, and the prophets; do they live forever?” (Zechariah 1:5). The prophet said to the Jewish people: Your ancestors reconsidered and conceded that the admonitions of the prophets were fulfilled, as it is stated: “By my words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, did they not overtake your fathers? And they repented and said: As the Lord of hosts intended to do to us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so has He dealt with us” (Zechariah 1:6).
In relation to the modern State of Israel, I believe that it is set on a course which will bring it to a temptation even greater than the temptation it faced when the mixed multitude stirred up its fears that Moses had been taken away in judgment against it forever and it was left needing a god like the golden calf to guide it. The even greater temptation is now appearing on the horizon. It is the temptation to defend its existence by relying on the immediate threat of starting a nuclear world war. Just as Israel was tempted not to trust HaShem, but to trust a golden calf instead of turning again to HaShem, as HaShem would command Israel to do by the prophet, Zechariah, so in these latter days Israel would again be tempted to not trust HaShem. This is the spiritual path that the United States of America took, claiming that its motto was, “In God We Trust”, instead, when it seemed to come down to a never ending war with Japan, instead of casting itself on the mercy of God, the U.S. trusted instead on demonically broadcasting and forecasting the threat of the nuclear annihilation of Japan and of whomever else might threaten the U. S. in the future. Having then set itself up as the ultimate military defender of the State of Israel, the U.S. secretly offered to give Israel the go ahead to develop nuclear war capability for itself. The State of Israel then proceeded to build this nuclear golden calf. This remains unofficial. However, the day will soon come, unless the people of Israel should repent, when it will no longer be unofficial. There is no failure of Israel's witness to the truth of HaShem that could be greater, yet it is already forgiven and redeemed. For HaShem will be faithful to his promises to Israel for the sake of the fathers and mothers, in the merit of Yehoshua HaMashiach. This is the Good News of Israel And Her Messiah. For the corporate repentance that has been accomplished in Mashiach, the head, is made by atonement to be counted as the corporate repentance of the body of All Israel and shall be actualized by the action of faith in the full measure of the redemption.
When Jerusalem and Israel are fully redeemed, as in the Revelation of Yehoshua HaMashiach, all that has been done in the study and observance of the Torah through the generations will be redeemed and will constitute the claim of HaShem upon His Creation in every specific detail described by every mitzvah of the Torah as described in the halachah of the sages of Israel, for the sake of the re-creation of all things in Mashiach.
