"It (Newburyport and the Civil War) was so well researched and read smoothly and clearly, with personal thoughts added to make it so enjoyable." Emily S. Corbato, Bradeis University

Bill Hallett has written a crisp and well-researched monograph on the contribution and history of Newburyport, Massachusetts during the Civil War. As a Civil War re-enactor, native of the town and long-time president of the Civil War Roundtable of New Hampshire, he is more than qualified to record the history of this important New England port. The book has twelve chapters and is liberally sprinkled with interesting photographs of Newburyport. Historic personalities, such as William Lloyd Garrison and Frederic Douglass are prominently featured. The book also follows the history of the Eighth and Thirty-fifth Massachusetts regiments in whose ranks marched many from Newburyport. This is an important addition to anyone's Civil War library but especially for those interested in Massachusetts history. ~ Duane Shaffer, co-founder Civil War Roundtable of New Hampshire

Just about every small town in America sent some of its sons off to fight in the US Civil War. In a lot of cases, the chronicle of each towns Vets and contributions to the war have been lost to history or are scattered in multiple archives.

Fortunately for Newburyport, Mr. Hallett has done the necessary research and has documented the contributions of the town during this countries greatest conflict. You won't have to be from the area to find this narrative fascinating. It is well written, and is clearly a labor of love by the author. I can only wish others would take up the challenge and produce equally well written histories for other towns. ~ Micahel Schroeder, president Civil War Roundtable of New Hampshire
