Newark High JROTC is NOT a military class and there is absolutely NO military commitment upon graduation. This class IS a leadership class where students get exposure to various lessons while learning how to conduct themselves, lead others, and becoming better students. The entire program is built on growing, maturing, and helping each other graduate high school. This class can be a semester, a whole year, or a student can stay for all 4 years. Once graduated, JROTC leadership will help them as they transition to the workforce, go on to college, or serve this great nation in a variety of ways.
Newark JROTC is a dual credit course for students. For cadets entering their first year they would receive JROTC credit, Health requirement credit, and an elective History credit. For completion of their second year, they would receive JROTC credit, an elective General Science credit, and their gym requirement. For students entering their third year, they receive JROTC credit and Financial Literacy credit (Financial Literacy is now a Ohio graduation requirement for all students)
Graduation requirements awarded for completion of JROTC:
1st year - Health
2nd year - Gym (waiver)
3rd year - Financial Literacy
Additional Graduation Requirements:
For the Class of 2020 and beyond, Ohio Department of Education has established 12 pathways to help students reach their graduation goals. Along with achieving 20 credits and end of course testing in Algebra and English, students must complete two (2) of the pathways -- these are called SEALS. Enrolling in JROTC a student can complete both required SEALS to graduate. Below are three of the seals offered in our class.
a. Community Service -- Students must complete 40 hours of community service
b. Student Engagement -- Students must complete two years in school recognized sport or organization
c. Military Enlistment Seal -- Students must complete two years in JROTC (Enlistment is not a requirement)
Newark High School AFJROTC program started in 2009 with 54 cadets and has grown every year since. The motto of AFJROTC is -"Develop citizens of character, dedicated to serving their nation and community" This program is a corps of cadets, run by the cadets, the emphasis is on leadership and management where there are several positions held by cadets that mirror active duty positions, ie. Commander, Deputy Commander, Color Guard Commander, First Sergeant, Mission Support Squadron Commander, Physical Training NCO (PT)... Many of these positions are rotated on a semester schedule to allow as many cadets a chance to get some real world application of leadership while still in an academic environment.
Our class is free of charge to any student who wishes to experience what we are all about, that includes the uniforms we wear and the PT gear we issue to the cadets. Two times a year we travel on a "Curriculum In Action" (CIA) or field trip that is also free of charge to any cadet.
