Overview of the Research Group

Welcome to the web site of the Computer Networks Group of TEI of Crete. Our research focuses primarily on the following domains.

Distributed Computing:

The work on this topic focuses on locating the community structure networks, based on local interactions between neighboring nodes and on distributed hierarchical clustering algorithms. The methodology used in our approaches is firstly the use of the synthetic coordinate systems that use spring lattice dynamics in space to appropriate place nodes belonging to the same community in proximity of one another. It is our belief that this mechanism can be of use in several occasions. The second powerful technique we use is flow propagation which is mainly used when we seek to locate a local community surrounding a node.

Social Network Analysis:

Clustering and community detection has been proven to be a powerful tool in the exploration and analysis of Social networks in several occasions. We currently explore the applicability of this technique for the development of recommendation and the exploration of online social networks like twitter, youtube, etc. as well as other databases with an underlying social structure.

Multimedia Applications:

The work on this topic focuses to apply the proposed methodology of social networks analysis on multimedia and pattern recognition problems. An example of this application is the interactive image segmentation problem, thus classifying image pixels into foreground and background classes given some foreground and the background markers are given.
