Sensory Neurone
Above: Parts of the sensory neurone. The arrow indicates the direction of transmission of nerve impulses from the sense organ to the CNS (Central Nervous system).
· Also known as receptor neurone.
· Cell body is usually located along the length of the neurone.
· Transmits impulses from the sense organs or receptors to the CNS.
Description/Function of the different parts of the neurone
NB: The description/function to each part is the same for all three neurones.
Relay Neurone
Above: Parts of the relay neurone.
· Also known as intermediate neurone.
· Acts as an intermediate between sensory and motor neurone.
· Found in the spinal cord and brain.
Motor Neurone
Above: Parts of the motor neurone.
· Also known as effector neurone.
· Cell body is located at the end of the neurone.
· Transmits impulses from the CNS to the effectors.
How are the three types of neurones inter-connected?
Above: Location of sensory neurone, relay neourone and motor neurone. The arrows represent the direction of transmission of nerve impules.
