Hello. My name is Mr. Nefalar, but everyone calls me "Mr. Nef" or "Nef" which is fine by me. I started teaching at Kearny DMD in 2012. Previous to this, I taught at Kearny CTA (now EID) for 7 years and did my student teaching at Kearny SIB (Now SCC). I have taught CAHSEE Prep, Algebra Explorations, Geometry, Intermediate Algebra, Pre Calculus, and Statistics, in addition to Integrated Math I, II & III. I have also taught at University of San Diego, as part of their Upward Bound program. In Upward Bound I have taught prep classes for Intermediate Algebra, Pre Calculus, and Calculus.
I'm a graduate of Mira Mesa High School. I earned an Associates Degree from Miramar College, a Bachelors in Mathematics with a Minor In Interdisciplinary Computing in the Arts (Music), and a Masters of Education from UCSD.
In high school I was part of the Mira Mesa All male dance team (Captain & Founding Member), Co-ed Dance team (Captain), Sapphire Sound (Band - Alto Sax), Madrigals (Adv. Choir - Lead Tenor), 4 years of Football (Inside Linebacker & Running back), Baseball (Center, Left field & DH), and Basketball (Pt. Guard). Furthermore I participated in the non profit teen organization Friday Night Live and volunteered at my church, Good Shepherd Catholic Parish, all while staying on the honor roll and taking a college course (Calculus) senior year.
In college I took dance classes at Mesa college, where I ended up teaching dance also, as well as at UCSD, after I transferred. I also was on the dance team 220 Second To None where I directed and choreographed. (YouTube dance videos are still online, search: "Bernie Nefalar").
My skill in teaching comes not from my knowledge of mathematics, but from my pride in communicating clearly and directly. My goal is to inspire students to want to have greater life for themselves than they ever believed possible. I want students to see that the implications of their choices and actions as a high school student affects their entire outlook of life post high school graduation. I want to teach students that through hard work, determination, and discipline, they can achieve success in whatever they choose to do in life.
