OCLC Knowledge base and WorldShare ILL – Video Conference with OCLC Staff.
Tony Melvyn
Fifty Shades of Grey was the most requested title on ILL in 2013.
The WorldShare ILL was the largest migration to a cloud based service, First Search ILL was discontinued in May of 2014.
First Search will be replaced by WorldCat, this should be completed by December of 2015.
ILLiad currently searches WorldCat with SRU/W which will be replaced with API.
You still need to use your 9 digit authorization to search OCLC stats.
To recap; First Search ILL is gone and First Search Admin. will be gone by December 2015. OCLC Service Configuration will replace First Search Admin.
80% of OCLC Interlibrary Loan Libraries are using WorldShare ILL, 13% are using ILLiad, and 7% are using some other system. The ILLiad Libraries are doing 60% of the lending.
New and Improved Services in WorldShare ILL include:
Article Exchange
Policy Directory
Days to respond
15 lenders
Get it now with IFM
OCLC Knowledge Base
World Cat Discovery
Loan-copy-copy-loan
World Cat Knowledge base is a new fulfillment service that will replace document suppliers like BRI. You will no longer use ILL to get articles.
You will be able to use “get it now Articles” for copyright clearance center. This will provide instant access and you will be able to use IFM to purchase. It will be restricted to ILLiad users going to WorldShare ILL in 2015. BRI is coming on this summer as a pilot and it will be possible to get an article in as little as two minutes.
ILL Fee Management is migrating to API web services. There will be a chance so that IFM is triggered at shipped instead of received. It will also include the ability to issue refunds to libraries you didn’t mean to charge. It will also allow other countries to use IFM with their own currency.
Remember that IFLA voucher services are provided by OCLC.
World Cat Knowledge Base is included with the OCLC cataloging subscription at no extra charge. It combines data about your library’s electronic resources. It includes a license management tool that will help you determine if you have the rights to lend e-content. It can be implemented within ILL.
The WorldShare ILL and World Cat Knowledge Base integration will:
1- As a lender provide you with links to your A-Z list and these links will appear in the request. This can help to speed up processing times by days and hours.
2- Direct request processing for articles will be linked to World Cat Knowledge Base and will pick lenders where there are licensing agreements in place. A deflection policy can be setup.
It can be difficult for ILL staff to setup licensing policies. OCLC set up a spreadsheet of current users with aggregated data access through the website. It is a wonderful tool to use for various venders. You need to load your e-content into World Cat Knowledge Base at your own pace. The World Cat Knowledge Base group list will show you who is using it. They offer a robust implementation process with community forums; libraries helping libraries.

The World Cat Knowledge Base includes access to World Share metadata. OCLC produces many reports and surveys. 1,400 libraries are using World Cat Knowledge Base with 430 million holdings for ebooks and serials.
The Global Knowledge base is maintained by OCLC and we have good relationships with larger vendors. We do not currently have relationships with many of the smaller vendors or open access products but we are working to correct that.
Following are the planned World Cat Knowledge Base phases:
1- OCLC will gather vender data for the World Cat Knowledge Base and then provide the data to libraries through World Cat Knowledge Base. Libraries can see changes to the collection in World Cat Knowledge Base.
2- Individual libraries can make changes to existing knowledge base information. An example of this is when the coverage dates are incorrect and access is no longer provided through the vendor.
3- Members can add new records and new collections, for example the Canadian Government information.
Benefits to World Cat Knowledge Base include:
1- Link resolving
2- Integrated linking
3- A-Z list
4- Updates will be delivered automatically
