9:00 Gather and Welcome

9:30-11:30 Teshuva: Transgression and Transformation

A workshop on teshuva (a return/change/repentance/transformation/healing process) focusing on self reflection as we prepare for the Day of Atonement and the New Year. This will be an interactive opportunity to both engage with the theme of transgression and transformation, as well as a space to reflect concretely on the past year through exercises and text study.

11:30 Lunch

12:30-2:00 The Ashamnu Prayer: Reflections on Palestine and Communal Responsibility

The ashamnu prayer—literally we have sinned –is said multiple times throughout Yom Kippur.  The prayer is in the plural rather than the personal because we are not autonomous individuals but rather share responsibility for the actions of others in our communities and society.  What is our communal responsibility in light of the ongoing occupation of Palestine and Palestinian peoples?  How does this connect to struggles for social and economic justice in our communities in the US?  What challenges does this create for us in engaging with Judaism?

2:30-3:30 High Holiday Melodies 101

A workshop focused on learning tunes, chants and melodies that will be used throughout the next 24 hours so that we can all enter the space prepared, confident and inspired to sing our ways through Yom Kippur.
