This project is a continuation of the Open Lab SIVAL project started in February 2015 in this new semester. (Sept 2015- Jan 2016) The project is working with year 2 and year 3 undergraduate Fine Art NCAD students and asks students to respond to a range of sites/locations as a springboard for a series of experiments. The emphasis on this project is on collective and individual experimentation and experiential learning. The project aims to introduce participants in a tactile and embodied way to the potential of expanded media practices. Work produced doesn't necessarily have to be hi-tech and can use imaging, sound recording, sensing, objects, materials.
Students have been asked to consider one of the following: Earth, Body, Street, Sky as broad starting points for their initial brainstorming studio research. They are asked to consider also integrating content delivered during workshops.
The project includes a second seminar with archaeologist Steve Davis of UCD and artist Amy Walsh. There will be a number of workshops, field work in the NCAD Community Garden, and an event in the garden and A4 Art on Thomas Street. The workshops taking place are around intrepreting, visualising and sonifying data. with physical computing, sensing technologies, recording technologies, 3D modelling - Grasshopper and Quartz Composer and Resolume. Students will be working in a field situation testing and gathering data, and mapping through various technologies and techniques.
The project involves staff from NCAD; Cliona Harmey, Claire Nidecker, Denise Beck, Mark Jones, Mickey Smyth. Also teaching workshops are visiting artist and programmer Fiona Mc Donald, artist Pierre Jolivet, UCD and architect Michael Mescal, UCD. The team at the NCAD Community Garden (Rian Coulter and Tony Lowth) are kindly hosting field work in the garden.
