Welcome

Naosuke Mukoyama (Nao)

I am an Associate Professor of Global Governance at the Institute for Future Initiatives, the University of Tokyo. Before joining UTokyo, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Cambridge and a Junior Research Fellow at Wolfson College. I received a DPhil (Ph.D) in international relations from the University of Oxford in March 2021, after completing my LL.B. and MPhil in Political Science at the University of Tokyo.

My research agenda broadly centers on the emergence and development of the sovereign state. I am interested in state formation, resource politics, and historical international relations, mainly focusing on East/Southeast Asia and the Middle East. My work investigates how sovereign states were formed outside of Europe and how this state formation process led to various political issues in these countries. My first book project based on my DPhil dissertation investigates the relationship between natural resources, especially oil, and the creation of new states through decolonization. My other research projects include the resource curse, territorial order in early modern Japan, and people's perception of the geographical scope of Asia.
